everyone was so helpful the other day, i thought i'd come back with one more ask. i'm trying to get norton system works on this machine and i chose the typical install option which included norton clean sweep. for some reason the machine doesn't like it when setup tries to install clean sweep and locks up. i want to start the installation over but all it will do is exit setup and offer to resume it when i go back into setup. any way to make it quit setup completely so i can start over and select which components i want it to install ommitting clean sweep?

It may be your 166 and 40 ram isn't enough for a normal installation.
My embattled opinion on system works is it's a piece of junk and you're better of without it. It's almost certainly going to slow things down.

You need to choose advanced setup, Can't remember the exact verbage here. Just don't say OK to the default setup screen. When all the components are visible on the screen you can change the options on how or if you install that option. It is a little confusing. Try clicking or double clicking on cleansweep and you will see what I mean. If you have Go Back I would recommend that you not install that program either. If this doesn't make sense when you try again, post back to me and I will insert the disk and go thru it step by step.

Thanks guys, but the problem is, I'm in the middle of setup. When I exit setup and reenter, it only allows me to resume or exit setup. It won't allow me to quit it completely so I can start over.

OK, in that case if the setup won't proceed any farther you have a problem. What may be happening is that programs running in the background are causing this problem. You could try Ctrl+Alt+del and see if that will open a window to the running processes. Wait, I don't know if this will work in WinXP as I don't use XP. Hopefully, someone else will jump in here.
I will tell you this. Symantic software is a pain in the a** to troubleshoot if installed wrong. That said, if you find in the end you must reboot, DO NOT attempt another install before cleaning out any files and refistry entries that were created. This can be done by going to add/remove programs and remove any part of this program that may show up there. The live update should be the last thing removed. Then go to windows explorer and open any folder related to this suite. Use any uninstall utilities that exist. Then delete any directories and folders there. Then any temp or windows temp folders that have any symantic stuff, any icons on the desktop. Empty the recycle bin and run a registry cleaner. If the install refuses to go forward after you try again this means there are still registry keys in place. Scan the registry for stuff using wildcards. I told you it wasn't easy. Before attempting a cleansing as just described it is worth a try to install again. This time do the install only after closing as many running programs as possible. Go for the default install, the same exact way that you tried before. If you get the suite to install you can modify the install later. I recommend Regcleaner 4.3. Find it here: http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

I'm probably going blind or something but where did you get the idea this might be Windows XP? I'm ready to blush when you point it out.

You don't need to blush. I haven't a clue as to why I was thinking that. The remainder of the reply still should hold true. That makes is easier because those keystrokes DO work in 98. The essence of it is that symantic sure makes in hard to work with thier software. I currently have NSW pro2003 installed mostly for Ghost. I have had to troubleshoot symantic products before and they can be a B**ch. I wonder how jox is making out. After reading my reply he probably either decided I was crazy or that it was too much work and gave up.

here's the verdict.... i'm installing this after a clean install of windows 98. i think i'll just reformat and start again. it seems to be less trouble than to try to clean the norton install off. i really only wanted it for the anti virus anyway.

Read the install screens prior to clicking. I know there are ways to eliminate parts of the suite but you can't just pick out one program to install. I think to get NAV you will need to install a couple of others. I don't believe cleansweep is one of the manditory programs. You are running Win98, correct? Use ctrl+alt+del to shutdown all running processes except systray and explorer before starting the installation.
