Hi all. Having an annoying time with my start menu. It is a mess and I'd like it in alphabetical order please.

Win 98se/IE6.026/no active desktop. This is really bugging the hell outta me. I've now tried allsorts to sort the program menu into alphabetical order. I've been to the registry and deleted all 'order' values from HKEY/curruser/software/Msoft/Win/currver/menuorder/(start menu, &progs, documents, faves, etc)rebooted, favorites order value has returned as is menu order value, but program menu order remains deleted. Start/ProgMenu order still a mess.

Also tried windows key + P then application key + B, that didn't work either.

But, if I open internet explorer I can go to the favourites menu at the very top of the browser, right click in there, and sort by name. My favourites folder gets reorganised fine, but my progs list is still a mess.
I have no right click option in the start menu (it works fine everywhere else) nor can I drag and drop in the start menu. The prog files are in order in C/Windows/startmenu/folder, though moving them around in there doesn't have any effect on the start menu anyhow.

This has been niggling me for months now, if anyone has any other suggestions I could try I would appreciate it.

Many thanx as always.
nick.

go to start/settings/Taskbar and start menu and in the advanced tab click re-sort that should give you menu in a-z order. It worked for me

Good luck

thanx again Kim, but been there and done all that, (plus several other posts too). Still no joy I'm afraid. The right click and re-sort option would be great but as I say I don't have the right click option, i.e. I go to start menu right click anywhere but the very top section of the menu and nothing happens. I can sort the 'top list' out, new office doc, open office doc, winzip, yahoo msgr, but can't right click anywhere else.

I'd like to get this fixed if at all possible without the use of third party software.

Thanx again for looking thru the archives for my benefit Kim, (this is what I love about this forum)....any more takers??
nick.

How about a 'left or right' click drag and drop? Does it work?

I know you've got 98, but have you thought of posting your problem on one of the other forums? ME or 2000 for example. Others with 9x OS often post on them when they can't get answer from their own. You never know, someone may have info you need!

After losing drag&drop on a Win95 machine, I did a search and found that I had to replace dcom. I installed the file and it restored drag&drop and right click for me. I found the file at Microsoft.

Ok Tom. Found the Dcom thing on the MS site, read the stuff on the site with it....sounds technical.......all I wanted was my progs menu in alphabetical order lol.
I'll back up the machine, open the file, and let you know.....I thought this was gonna be really simple ;0)
thanx again

I have a similar problem with WinMe, only I managed to get my drag and drop back by going into "Toolbars," "Properties," and then clicking the options there under the "Advanced" tab where it says to "enable drag and drop." There is also a place there to enable the right click menu option, but it doesn't work for me, maybe for you? I'll try the Dcom though...one never knows...
