i reformatted my hard drive and now i can only get 16 colors instead of the 256 that i need. i have tried updating my drivers and that didnt work. my resolution isnt right and i dont know what to do. i am just a dumb girl and cant figure it out. can someone walk me thru this nightmare?
Windows installs that video adapter when it doesn't know what kind you have. You need to find what video adapter you have and then download its drivers.
Sometimes you can open the case and take a look at the video card to ID it. Or, if it's on the motherboard and not a card, that info should be in the motherboard manual or on the driver disk that came with the motherboard.
You can also download software to ID the video adapter. I usually use Everest. The newer Everest versions don't work with 98 but you can download older versions here:
Download the 1.10 version at the bottom of that page. Run the file you download. I believe running the download will install an icon on your desktop. Then click on the icon to run Everest. Click on its 'display' option and then 'PCI/AGP video' and post back what it says.
Or if you have the motherboard disk and the video is on-board, run the disk and it should install the drivers.
Assuming that you had no problems with the display prior to reformat, and that you've made no hardware changes, go into Device Manager to see if there are any problems noted. Look for Yellow ?-! denoting device problems. See link for Device Manager Help.
To get to Device Manager, right click on MY COMPUTER, select properties at the bottom of the Menu, then click on Device Manager Tab.
It is not unusual to have some hardware issues after a Win98 reinstall, Display and Sound seem to be the most common.
You can force Windows to Re-detect and install your Display adapter and Drivers by Locating the Display adapter in Device Manager and selecting Remove from the right-click Context menu.
First click on the + sign to expand the Display Adapter Category. Right Click on the adapter in the expanded list, select Remove, click yes or OK to exit, then restart your Box.
If you see more than 1 Display adapter listed, remove all adapters before you restart. ALL must be removed.
Or restart Windows will (should) detect and install your Display adapter and appropriate drivers.
This should work unless your System requires drivers form a source other than Your Win98 CD. ie Motherboard CD or aftermarket Video card CD.
If stll having problems, post back with Computer Make and model # and the info from the General Tab on the Dailog Box that opens when you right click MY Computer.
Are you reinsalling from Win98 CD or an OEM Restore CD?
Definitely get Everest Home edition.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.
Generally with nvidia downloads you just run the file on the computer needing the drivers and they will install. You probably want the 10.7 meg english version.
It's best to upgrade directX BEFORE installing the drivers. I think 98 comes with version 6. There's a link on the nvidia page for version 9c
I haven't used this particular version but if the download is similar to version 9a, running it will extract 10 other files. Of those, run the one that says 'dxsetup' to do the installation.
DAVEINCAPS.... i want to thank you so much for helping me and teaching me along the way. i am sooooo glad i stumbled onto this site last night. i have another question maybe you can help me with. when i reformatted 98SE a DLL file cannot be found and i have no clue where i might find it. Its C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CRTDLL.DLL i've searched and cant figure it out. p.s. still working on the display driver
Gerproud - for future reference bookmark the following site. You will have to register to use it but it is a veritable treasure trove of device drivers. Good luck!:>) www.driverguide.com
I'm glad you got the video set up. The dll file you need is on the 98 cd. Put the 98 cd in the cdrom. If it autostarts just close it. Then go to START--RUN and type in SFC. Choose to extract a file, type in CRTDLL.DLL and click 'start'.
'Restore from' should show your cdrom drive letter and the win98 folder--D:\WIN98\. 'Restore to' should show C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Then just click OK.
DAVEINCAPS YOU ARE THE BOMB!!!! IT WORKED. Another question for you.... why do i get the screen that says its a violation and needs to close. what is that about and why do i get it?
DAVEINCAPS YOU ARE THE BOMB!!!! IT WORKED. Another question for you.... why do i get the screen that says its a violation and needs to close. what is that about and why do i get it?
i think i got that taken care of...but here is a new one. since i reformatted when i start up windows i get message....cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
windows registry or system. INI file referes to this device file, but the device file no longer exsists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application assocation with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace missing file. vnetsup.vxd same message repeats but with the files vredir.vxd and dfs.vxd
i have no clue where or what these files belong to. what do i do
Those have to do with a network card setup. You can probably uninstall and reinstall those drivers. Or I believe those particular files are on the 98 cd and can be extracted with SFC as you did with crtdll.dll. They should all be extracted to c:\windows\system\. I think SFC will default to extracting them there anyway.
There wouldn't be a file just named vxd. The message shows at least these three as missing:
vnetsup.vxd vredir.vxd dfs.vxd
Those 3 are on the 98 cd. When I checked, SFC didn't default to installing them in c:\windows\system so you'd either have to browse to that location or type it in.
Somtimes after installing missing files windows will then find others are missing too. But go ahead and install the above 3 files and we'll see what happens.
i downloaded a game from Real Arcade but when i try to play it i get Access Violation @ address 0494DOC in module 'Fibertwig.EXE' Read of address FFFFFFFF i press OK then the screen goes black and i have to use Task Manager to close it out and never get the game. Did i download it wrong?
An 'access violation' occurs when the program tries to access a memory location it's not allowed to access. There's no specific fix for the error. It could be a badly written or corrupted program. Other causes I found while googling are malware, bad ram, directx or drivers, particularly the sound card.
As part of the download did you get stuck with other software too? A lot of that is malware and isn't needed to run the program. It's often included because advertisers, or those who sell information to them, pay the software developer or download site.
Did you install the directX OK?
Check in device manager to make sure all the hardware is set up right. Anything there with a yellow ? or ! has some problems.
You could also try downloading the game again from a different site or maybe getting a newer version.
i uninstalled and reinstalled the game and got the same thing. whats funny is i can play vol 2 of the game but not vol 1. i use this site almost daily without any problems. my directx is installed and i currently am not using a sound card. could that be my problem? I still have to ck my device manager. keep you posted.
Not infrequently nor unknown for games various to - a: make illegal (i.e. naughty) calls to a memory address or range of same; b: to require almost a specific generation of graphic card (and may tolerate the next one alongas well); apparently work/behave OK with a later version of the game (and sometimes it's only the first version that is OK). Occasionally too a specific version of a given util/add-in (e.g. directx or whatever) is required, and any other is no way, no go...
I didn't find any links to others having the same problem with the game. It may be due to not having a sound card as most games seem to want to dazzle you with irritating kids-banging-on-pots-and-pans type noises.
Another thing may be directx. If the game was written using an earlier version of directx maybe ver. 9 is 'too much' for it. That shouldn't be the reason as newer versions should add to what older ones can do and not interfere. But you never know. It's not easy to downgrade the version you're using and I wouldn't suggest that unless you could be absolutely sure.
Those are just guesses. If there's a user support site for the game you may want to see if they know anything about it.
thank you for both of your suggestion. I think that i will just not play the game it sounds to complicated for me right now. lol. i thank you so much for all of your help. now i have to post on my XP system. if it isnt one computer its another. lol DAVEINCAPS. all of those files that i started saving to my desk top...can i delete them off the desktop or computer itself without making a new problem? or where should i put them
If you mean the directx and video driver downloads, I'd save them in case you need them again. Or burn them to a cd if you have a burner. If you save them on the hard drive you might want to put them in a folder named something like DRIVERS. Just open MY COMPUTER--C: DRIVE and create the folder there. Then drag the files from the desktop to that folder.
When you ran the directx download it extracted to several files. You can probably delete them since you'll still have the main download.
i reformatted my hard drive and now i can only get 16 colors instead of the 256 that i need. i have tried updating my drivers and that didnt work. my resolution isnt right and i dont know what to do. i am just a dumb girl and cant figure it out. can someone walk me thru this nightmare?
You need to install the drivers for the video. If you have on-board video or the card originally came with the PC then the drivers are probably on the motherboard or system manufacturer's site or on a driver disk that would have come with the PC. If a video card was added the drivers would have been included or could be found on the card manufacturer's site.
You might want to start a new thread. Just go to the top of the left column here under 'general forums' and click on your operating system. Then give a more complete explanation with info on your system and we should be able to find the drivers.

When you click on 'update drivers' in device manager windows won't find anything unless you supply a location--folder or disk--which has the updated driver files.
You might want to start a new thread with your particular problem so more people will see it. Read my posting #31, just above yours, if you're not sure how to do it.
