My computer is very slow and sluggish so I assume that it is infected with spyware or virus of some sort. My problem is when I download and run the free scans from the various vendors, they all find infected files or cookies etc but none of them find the same ones. Before I purchase software, I would like to feel confident that it really worked and the items they found were bogus just to make me purchase the product. I would like to know what is the best remover to purchase.

Spybot; ccleaner useful (wise?) to have around too.

AdAware and Spybot often find the same and also different pests - both are excellent "Free" utils. Do not download/use the Ad Aware util (note teh slight difference in the name); it's not a freebie and has had some negative press in the past...

Also M$ are running a freebie/beta util that is getting very good reports; worth using
too - viz:

Hi jimdhl rodger ashsley, trvlr, hello everyone,

The Microsoft AntiSpyware does do a good job. Unfortunately it is only for Windows Xp, Windows 2003, and Windows Server 2003.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Jim, The pay for tools do intentionally produce false positives to feed on those whom are guided by paranoia.

The free tools work just fine. Each tool does find different items so you do want to run as many as needed.
http://computing.net/security/wwwboard/tools.html has all of them with active links.

Hi jimdhl rodger ashsley, trvlr, Bryran, hello everyone,

trvlr,

I was getting ready to comment in my previous post to also download MS AntiSpyware. Just before clicking on Submit the coffee kicked in and I woke up. :-)

Very good point Bryan. Don't rely on just one product.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Beware of these so called undispensible tools. As Bryan mentioned, a lot of these pests that are found don't even exist. Worse than that, someof these programs actually install spyware and adware.

... quite the echo - it's like you hear something, then hear it all over again.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
