Hello!
I have AOL and they provide an anti spyware program called "Spybot."
I went to Microsoft to download their free version but it is only for versions higher than 98.
My computer has been running slow, I ran another program called Spydoc3.2 as a trial, it detected over a thousand items but wouldn't let me delete them without purchasing the software.
Is there a site that is safe for downloading free anti spyware software and what program should I look for?
Thank you for any suggestions :)
Lisa

Hi Lisa, I thought that we cleared all of this up before christmas.
There are many so called antispyware programs that are not up to scratch. Some try to get you to buy their products by inventing problems that aren't even there. They might also install their own spyware which funnily enough, it never finds!
At the top of this forum you will find a link to useful security tools. Get 'Ad-Aware' and 'Spybot Search and Destroy'. I use both of them. Don't forget to update them and it's usually worth running them both in safe mode.
Tip! Run Spybot first, it automatically ticks everything. If you get a big list with Ad-Aware, right click one of the entries to find the option to select all.

Something of a rundown on the worst offenders here - spelling counts too, quite a few of the knockoffs use nearly identical variations of the more legitimate product names
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I believe I would throw in Spywareblaster too, it is free, and is found here http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/Spywareblaster.html

Sorry, the address listed above for spywareblaster is not the correct one, it has been changed to http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html

.. which is also included at the top of the forum page 'list of links'
More of a prophylactic measure than a scanning tool

Rimfire!
How nice to see you :)
I remember what I was to do and I have been. Lately, my computer has been running slower, then, on the news, it was suggested that you have two spyware programs.
I tried to run Spybot several times last night and it stopped scanning on file 5205 each time. It was still reading but didn't move from there. What do you think could be doing that?
I will download the program from this site and see if that works. It concerns me that the program got stuck on that file each time.
Thank you for your help :)
Lisa

Hello Mike,
Thank you for your suggestions :)
I will download those programs today and see if that fixes the problem.

Hmmmm,
The program that I could download from here is the same as the one I have now. I just tried to do a quick scan and it wouldn't finish.
What could be causing that? I run the program once a week, this hasn't happened before. I ran Ad-Aware to see if that helped but it didn't.
What do you think?
Thank you :)
Lisa

Spyware Blaster doesn't fix an existing problem, it's preventative.
To reduce the load on scanning software, it can be helpful to clear out Temporary Internet Files (TIFs, if you use IE) as well as the 'temp' folder (usually c:\windows\temp)
A useful program for clearing away digital debris is CCleaner

.. but if you're still encountering problems running Spybot, also try from Safe Mode, or else use Spybot's 'Settings' menu and have it ignore the problem entry.

Hello Jboy,
I hope you have been well :)
I ran SpybotSD, I don't know if I have the Spyware Blaster. The one link I clicked on from this site was for Spybot Search and Destroy, that is the program I have on my computer now.
I cleaned files and will run the program you suggested.
Thank you :)

RealID,
I may end up doing that, I'm just wondering what is preventing it from completing the scan.
Thank you for your help :)

For various reasons, sometimes Spybot will hang when checking for a specific entry. It might be a programming bug - it's advisable to use the latest updates for the program, but if that doesn't help (and you're fairly sure the entry in question isn't actually on your system) then you can exclude it from the check

I've had spybot hang when doing the 'c2.lop' scan. But it'll usually continue after a pause of several minutes.
It might be helpful to first do the scans from safe mode.
I would disable or uninstall anything provided by AOL. Some of their anti spyware stuff will run every few minutes and there's no sense in bogging down your machine with that.

Sure - as I recall, the 'C2.lop' thing occurred on some machines or configurations, but was (eventually?) corrected.
AOL.. has their own way of doing things - not always compatible with the rest of the world

If you type spywareblaster in Start/Find/Files or Folders you will see an entry if it is present. As has already been said, more or less, it is for "preventing" intrusions not fixing them.
It's a good one to install "after" you've solved your present problem (if not already there) and uses no resources.
Keep pegging away using the advice given and let's hope you fix your problem. If it comes to the crunch download HijackThis and copy/paste your log on here. I don't normally suggest this but the W9x forum is so boring lately I'm game for anything. They've all gone to XP I reckon.

Morning Lisa, you had me stumped when you replied to RealID. Then I realised that this was googlism aka jboy.
Running your scans in safe mode (press F8 repeatedly after the memory scan on reboot) can help remove some of the problems. In really infected computers, I like to also close most of the background processes using Ctrl-Alt-Del. Leaving only explorer, antivirus and firewall running, of course there's no point in closing 'taskman'. Also check for updates when running lean.
Don't forget, too many legitimate programs running will also slow your computer down.
