Comment:

I'm having major problems in regards to the SoundMax audio drivers for their intergrated sound chip that Intel had used on their Intel D845GRG mainboard, I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition for my operating system, and I'm trying to get the multimedia sound system to work with the "WDM3516b_Cadenza" sound drivers that Intel has listed on their site, these drivers are supposed to be specifically for use with either Win 98 S.E. or Win 98 M.E.

As for the specific make and model of my PC, I have a Gateway 2000 Nina "E" Series - E4000 with a Pentium 4 CPU, and 256 MB of DDR memory, and an Intel D845GRG mainboard, as I had already mentioned up above. I don't have any "System Restore" disks, as I bought this PC used, and none of the "System Restore Disks" that were originally included with this PC when new from Gateway 2000, unfortunately were not inside the box of cables, software and misc stuff.

After I'd formated and loaded a fresh copy of Windows 98 S.E. on this PC, I immediately then had installed Intels chipset drivers, and afterwards, just as I always do, I rebooted the PC (...as that is what Intel's instructions say to do). Then, I loaded the audio drivers for Win 98 SE from the Intel website that are labeled as follows: "WDM3516b_Cadenza" ...for '98 S.E. & M.E.

The problem is this, ...after the SoundMax audio drivers are installed and I after it reboots, I get the following error:

DSndUP error
...could not load the ADI codec driver.

Also, when rebooting the PC, the Win 98 S.E. hardware auto-detector is saying that it has found a new hardware device; "PCI Multimedia Device", but then it prompts me to direct it to the location of the drivers, however, I don't know where this directory is located, or if there even is one that exists.

If anyone can please help to assist me with getting this problem figured out, I'd greatly appreciate it. I can't seem to find the "ADI codec driver", ...I would imagine that it was probably supposed to be included with the downloadable driver from Intels site ...however, I doesn't appear that it was.

Please, please, please!!!! ...any help with this would be very much appreiated.

Thanks a million!!!

I've worked on 2 or 3 or the D845 series and have used the same sound file that you're using. I've had problems but not the ones you describe.

The Cadenza file is a self extracting zip file but it gives you the option to specify the directory to which it extracts. It defaults to windows\temp so that's probably where yours are. I extracted mine to c:\audio. Then, as I recall, I browsed there to run the setup program.

You may want to go to add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall the soundmax drivers. The run the downloaded file again and this time specify something like c:\audio as the directory. Then run setup again from there.

There's an additional file you need to install for 98 after you run the setup program and reboot. It's called 269601USA8.exe and will be in the same folder that you extracted the drivers to.

The D845's that I worked on used the AD1885 audio chipset. Your's is probably the same but you might want to see if you can locate it on the motherboard. It's a small chip about 1/4 inch square.
