Changes in the volume controls are normally caused by one of the programs that are started when windows boots. Run msconfig and check the startup tab. Deselect any programs that you suspect might be doing it.

Many programs, when installed, put themselves in the startup list. It's a good idea to go through the list and deselect the ones that you don't need running all the time. Your system will run better.

ABIT MoBo, AMD 2900+ 1Gb ram, 450W PSU, Liteon DVD/CD RW, Acer Cd RW, 160GB Maxtor HDD, Eastern multimedia super woofer speakers.

If you don't want to read all this just go to WWW.REALTEK.COM and find the instructions on dowloading and installing new drivers.
Had CHOPPY SOUND even at startup also erratic mouse behavior, it all started one day when I was ripping some tracks from a cd. I happened to be using WINMEDIA PLAYER 7or 9; when something seemed to have come from the Internet and PC froze. Sound problem started after it re-booted. I have a lot of programs on my PC, and I removed a lot from the startup programs. Was NO HELP! Checked for conflicting interrupts on Windows System Info Tools had a lot of sharing interrupts. Thought that was the problem. went up and downloaded all the latest drivers for my MoBo, still same problem. Finally found answer on the sound driver mfg. page. Feel like a dummy now, instructions download new driver, uninstall existing software, remove device from system (Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->Sound Video Game Controlers->find your sound card there and remove it), then yoou can reboot and your system should find the new devie and re-install the drivers (you may need to insert the CD or disk that came with your card).
For more information go to www.realtek.com and follow the instructions for installing new drivers. BUT DON'T DOWNLOAD AND USE THEIR DRIVER UNLESS YOU'RE USING THEIR SOUND DEVICE.
Appears as though this cleared up all my problems, even the erratic mouse behavior.
