I have a strange problem with a laptop that mutes the sound at startup. I can unmute after startup and it works fine until a restart. Any ideas??

a .ini file or an entry in system.ini. either can give an intial start-up configuration for the mixer. ( or try setting the mixer to 'save settings on exit')
you can even initialise this in autoexec.bat/config.sys but it isn't usual.
