I have recently used the Compaq Quick Restore CD that came with my computer. After using the CD I am now unable to hear any sound. When ever something with sound comes on it make a single "tick" sound the does nothing. I enter Control Panel and looked under the icon "sounds" and tried to play the sound for the asterisk and it told me this:ERROR. Windows cannot play the c:\windows\media\chord.wav file. The file may be damaged or may use an unrecognized compression format. To resolve the problem, replace the file or use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to install Audio Compression.
If and one could tell me what this means and how to fix it that would be greatly appreciated.

Check to see if you have a 'media' folder in the windows folder. If so, see if it contains any .wav files.
As the error message suggests, you can install the audio compression by going to the 'windows setup' tab in add/remove programs. Click once on 'multimedia' there and then click 'details'. If audio compression is checked then it's already installed. If it's not checked you may need a regular 98 cd to install that option.
That may not fix the problem anyway, but I can email you the wav files that normally reside in the media folder and it should work then.
This assumes, of course, that the sound card is set up OK.
