Comment:

I have a Compaq Presario 5000T and I have a major problem with the sound. When I start a program that is all about sound like sound recorder, windows media player, ect. It gives me the message, "Like I must have a sound card in order to do that operation." Also when I go to the control panel then multimedia, and audio tab, I can't costomize anything because it says no sound card is installed, but I have gone to control panel then system then the device manager, and I looked under sound, video, and game controllers, and it says I use an ESS Allego PCI Audio (WDM) I have almost done everything but I still am trying to fix it. I AM POSITIVE it is not my speakers because they are brand new. This problem hasn't really effected my computer, just I need some sound. But everything else works fine. Thanks, good luck I have tried a lot.

Hi

Just a thought.

Run dxdiag [click start button /run then type - ]

See what it says and if no obvious errors - do tests on music and sound.

When did sound stop working?

To all you people out there. When you get an error message, please post an exact copy of the message (the details are not usually necessary).

Another angle.
Boot into Safe Mode and remove Multimedia from Windows Setup as follows: (Note: you may need the Windows 9x installation CD)
-Go to: Start>Settings>Control Panel, 2x clk: Add/Remove Programs.
-Choose the Windows Setup Tab.
-In the list of installed components uncheck Multimedia.
-Click Apply, OK, close Control Panel.

Next, remove media resources entries from the Registry. Back up Registry first!!!
-Start>Run, key in: Regedit
-Expand (+) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Control\MediaResources
-Under this key, click once on the yellow folder by: Aux
-Press: Delete on the keyboard
-Click: Yes to confirm key delete
Do the same for the following folders: Midi, Mixer, and Wave.

Next, remove any sound driver remnants:
-Right click: My Computer, choose Properties
-Click on Device Manager tab
-Click on: (+) Sound, Video, and Game Controllers to expand
-Remove all sound card related items under this category by selecting the desired item and clicking: Remove
Once all items are removed, Sound, Video, and Game Controllers no longer appears in the list.

Now reboot, and reinstall the Sound Card Drivers.
(As Windows reboots it redetects the sound card and partially reinstalls multimedia components.)

Next, reinstall the Multimedia component as follows:
-Start>Settings>Control Panel, 2x clk: Add/Remove Programs
-Choose: Windows Setup tab
-In the list of installed components check Multimedia, click: Apply, OK, and close Control Panel.
Check the Sound.

Hi again

Noticed you also having problems with "safe mode" as well.

What didn't work?

What were the results of directx diagnostic?

When did sound stop working?

Are you installing from compaq disk or plain 98 install?

FZWG suggestion didn't work.
Yes I was having problems with safe mode but I got that working. Um it didn't show the sound card that I have under sound stuff. It is built in. I recieved this computer from my sister, and she said the sound just stoped working but she thought it was the speakers, but I know it isn't because I added brand new speakers. It came with Windows 98. I was never installing that.

Thanks
