I have recently had my computer (PC Windows 98 SE) fixed and re-formatted by my friendly local repair man.
The device manager states that the audio device fit under the 'Sound, video and game controllers' category is a CMI8738/C3DX PCI.
Finding that I was unable to run my 'Tiger Woods 2000' golf game under the new set-up (it had worked fine before), I followed the game's instructions to see if a more recent sound driver was available and I ran Windows Update. This seemed to refer to a more recent driver, which I tried to download.
Half-way through this process, I was asked to insert the Windows set-up disk so that a file could be copied. This disk is 90 miles away, as my father-in-law originally set up the computer for me. I was forced to abort the installation but discovered that the process has apparently knocked out the sound driver installed when the computer was repaired, as I can now get no sound whatever.
Before I have to make an embarrassed phone call to the repair man, I just wondered if anyone could talk me through re-installing the original driver myself, as the repair guy gave me a CD with the drivers on.
I am no expert here, as you may have gathered, so I will simply list the sound files showing on the CD and wait to here if any of you can identify what exactly needs to be re-installed and if it can be done by an amateur such as myself:
Folder - C-Media
Sub-folders - DOS, W95-98
DOS sub-folder: Dosapp sub-folder (contains C3dmix.co_, Fixepic.ex_, Setaudio.co_), Install, readme
W95-98 folder: 026 sub-folder (empty), Cmmpu, Sndvol32, uinstdrv, Sndvol32.cnt, mixerdef, Dlstable.dat, Dlswave.dat, cmpci026, cmpci031, cmpci032Jeff P

Download the driver from C-Media
Then right click on MY COMPUTER and click on propertys, then click the device manager tab then right click on sound card then propertys then update driver and tell it where you have it" You're only as safe as your last update "

Even if you have the proper driver disk you still may be asked for the windows cd for the parts of the system related to sound or multimedia.

With a new format/install you will be asked for the 98 CD. All the info that used to be in c:\windows\inf will be gone, and it needs to be rebuilt/added as you load drivers.
It's a good day when you learn something

Hi JeffP, Dan Penny, Bob, Wizard-fred
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to you all.Jeff to install any driver related to the hardware you will need your windows installation CD, check all your drives, your repair man might have placed a dump of win98 as a folder on any drive (possibly on c: or F:) if its there try the reinstallation of the driver & if it now asks for the win98 setup disk just give the path to it.
If the win98 folder is on c: then the path should be c:\win98 and so on.
Good luck.

It only asks for the win 98 disk for a driver for a game controller you can skip that if you like if you dont have a gampad or joystick. The sound otherwise will work. Try removing out of device manager all the multimedia and game controller divices then reboot. Windows will find them and put them back hopefully your drivers are still there just skip the game controller when windows asks for the 98 CD.
