I am on Windows 95, and I have NO sound. Speakers are properly connected and plugged in, but all i get is a sort of fuzzly static sound whenever i turn them on. What could be going wrong?
Many thanks in advance, and also to those who have answered my many problems over the ages!

Hi Hannah.
Remove your sound drivers and install them again, then restart your computer, this should do the trick. Post if you have no luck with this. Have a nice day.

Oldhobo: (plz do not take offence that I call you that!) Thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately I am completely hopeless with computers: could you possibly tell me HOW to remove sound drivers etc?
Sorry to be so stupid, have a nice day also!

Hello,
Have you installed drivers for you sound card? This is the software that let's a piece of hardware communicate with the operating system. If you are not sure you can check in the Device Manager to see if your sound card is listed and if there are any problems with it. You can find updated drivers for most hardware on the internet. You will need to know who made the card and the model though. If you aren't very familiar with computers you may need to have someone take a look at it for you.

I have installed "Wired for sound pro CD" but alas, this seemed to make things worse and didn't let me open some other games and programmes. I have since uninstalled this. But I don't think this was terribly helpful or the right thing to do. I do not understand computers and sound drivers etc!
Thankyou for your help

Hi Hannah.
Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, DEVICE MANAGER.
You will find your sound drivers there, just highlight the driver and push remove. But make sure you have the drivers to reinstall them with first. After you have removed them, just install the drivers again.

Make sure you speakers are plugged into the proper output. If they still don't work, try plugging in a pair of headphones. If you get sound in them, your speakers are not working. If not, open the Windows Volume Control and make sure the sound is turned up and not muted. If the Volume Control applet will not open or is not listed, you most likely need to install drivers for your sound card. This is the part where you will most likely need to have someone do it for you or show you how, as you'll need to identify your card, go the manufacturers web site and download the drivers, and then install them.
Hope that helps

Thanx: Oldhobo, how do you reinstall the sound drivers? What are they? Are they on a CD or the internet or what? I know this sounds really stupid, but im a bit clueless...

Sorry Hannah.
I went to bed at 11-45pm and have just signed on.I said to make sure you had your drivers before you deleted theold ones.
If you bought the computer from a store, you would have got, or should have got all the drivers needed. Have a look at everything that came with the computer. Look for something like sound blaster, sound driver, etc. If you cant find them, you will have to open the computer >AFTER TURNING IT OFF< And look for a name on the sound card. You will know which one is the sound card, it is the one behind where you plug in your speekers. E-mail me if you get into trouble. oldhobo@ruralnet.net.au
Have a nice day Hannah. time here now is
3-40 pm Australia.
