Do you use dial-up? If so, then your modem is using resources that your sound card is using.
Go to your device manager (start > settings > control panel > system > "Device Manager" tab). When your disconnected, you shouldn't see any problems. When you connect, you might see a yellow exclamation mark by your sound card.
If you have any free resources change the resources of either your modem or your sound card to the free ones.

Hi, thnx for replies ppl. epp_b could you tell me how I go about changing modem or sound card to free one? Not really sure how to about that, also there is a yellow exclamation mark next to "wave device for voice modem". anenefan I just tried diagnostics & message I got was "Direct sound resources, such as priority level, were already in use by another caller", this message showed when testing both sound & music. Guess I'll just have to reboot. Cheers.
