The next step is to clarify the problem by explaining where [In which Program/Application] you saw the error message and what exactly did the details button show about the Illegal Operation error. Answers to the following will supply those details:

You stated that the error occurred when you "go to use it".

How did you try to use the sound card?

Did you try to play Windows Sound Files in Control Panel> Sound and listen using your Speakers?

Did you try to Record your voice using a Microphone and Playback in Sound Recorder?[Programs>Accessories> Entertainments> Sound Recorder?]

Did you try to play Music CDs and listen? If so what Multimedia Progarm you used? [Windows Media Player? RealPlayer? Winamp?

In the Illegal Operation Error message, click the Details button and post the first two lines of the error message EXACTLY as seen.

First, make sure your Sound Card, Hercules Muse 5.1 is installed properly:

1. Open Device Manager [ RIGHT- click My Computer>Device Manager

2. Click the + Sound, video and game controllers and look for your Hercules Sound Card and that it has no error symbols like ! or ?

3. Check for ? Other devices:, and if present expand it and check if there is an entry for PCI Multimedia Device with an error symbol.

If item 2 above has no error symbol, and there is no ? Other devices: category, your Sound card is installed OK in Device Manager

4. Check for the presence of Hercules Sound card in Preferred device: box of Playback and Recording in the Audio tab of Multimedia properties.

A. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel

B. Double- click Multimedia>Audio tab

C. Look under Playback and then under Recording for Preferred device: box and if necessary click the Down arrowhead to select Hercules Sound Card

d. Make sure, there is a checkmark in the box of Show volume control on the taskbar

If all the above are already there your Hercules Muse 5.1 Videocard is configured properly in Multimedia

Uninstall and Reinstall the Software Media Statation that came bundled with your Hercules Soundcard Driver CD and try to play the Audio CD.

IMPORTANT: Before installing the software, disable all running programs , especially the Antivirus Program
