Bought some 2.1CH speakers the other day, conected them to the speaker jack on my PC, and they work great (2 x speakers + SW) for sounds on the PC. But the missus went to play one of her boring old CD's, BUT the CD Plays with NO SOUND.
Had a quick fiddle with some of the settings on the sound, to no avail.

There is a small audio cable that connects the CD drive to your soundcard - this is needed in order to play music CDs on the external speakers.
If you have a set of headphones, try plugging them into the jack on the CD drive - if you're able to hear the music from there, then you likely need to hook up the cable.

Also check your sound card software mixer to ensure the CD volume is up to a decent level and that it is not muted.

To do what Dan Pennet suggests, double click the yellow speaker in the Systray.

If your "speaker icon" is not in the systems tray, click on Start>Settings>Control Panel, when control panel opens, double click "Multimedia". Then in Multimedia properties, under the Audio Tab at top, there is an option to "Show volume control on the taskbar". then just "ok" your way out of screens.
