Driver downloads are usually single files that are self extracting archives, or *.zip files. You have to run (or double click on) the downloaded file if it has .exe at the end, or extract the files from the zip file, and point Windows to where the files were extracted to if Setup for the drivers does not start automatically, in order for Windows to be able to find the *.inf file for the drivers, or go to where the files were extracted to and find the Setup file and run it. Some self extracting archives will also run Setup within the files automatically when you run the downloaded file.
Windows 98 does not have a built in program to extract files from a *.zip file. Only XP does.
If you don't have anything to open a .zip file, I recommend WinZip 7, especially if you want something that isn't a hard disk space hog.
WinZip 7.0 is available here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.p...

Note: The Winzip web site no longer has that version, and you can download and use a newer version of WinZip, but WinZip 7.0 is the minimum you need for Win 9x and up (long file name support), it works fine in any version of Windows 9x and up, it supports multiple floppy (spanned).zips, the download is small enough to fit on a floppy disk, and it will use much less space on your hard drive than newer versions do.

i downloaded the files from sony, but when i installed, i got errors msg. it said cannot installed because it's not for my laptop model. or some other model. that's weird. but my laptop model is right.

also, i downloaded the drivers from other website, and when i tried to install driver manually, everytime i click "have disk" in update driver area, the computer froze. so i can't update any driver.

is there any way to fix this problem?

I have run into this problem with an older Sony laptop I worked on for a friend. It seems the Sony supplied driver software looks for some model label that is put there in Windows (by Sony) if you have the original Sony software installation, but it isn't there if your Windows is installed from a regular Windows CD. In his laptop's case, there were/are two devices (neither were the video drivers)I couldn't get the driver software to install for on a Windows 98SE installation using a regular CD. I had assumed it was at least partly because the original software had Win ME, but the attempted installation did give a model number not found or similar message.

What could you do about that? Use a program that identifies what the hardware on the computer actually is to find the actual video chipset, such as Everest Home Edition, or AIDA, available on the web, and search for drivers for that chipset.

"also, i downloaded the drivers from other website, and when i tried to install driver manually, everytime i click "have disk" in update driver area, the computer froze. so i can't update any driver."

Your video must be in a basic VGA mode when you install video drivers. If it isn't, look in Add/Remove Programs and Un-install any video drivers you tried installing, or that Windows may have installed, that are listed there.

See response 3 again regarding driver downloads.

Other than that, lots of things can cause your computer to freeze. E.g. if you are pointing to a floppy drive, does the computer recognize a floppy disk otherwise?
Is everything else working on the computer properly? Have you installed the drivers for the main chipset? - those MUST be installed after Windows Setup is finished. They may not be on the Sony web site in their downloads for your model - you may have to get them from the web site of the main chipset maker.

Video drivers are an exception -
you don't install video drivers when Windows doesn't know what video you have and wants you to point to the location of the video drivers while booting, or if you select change drivers in Device Manager, using Have Disk - if you do they probably won't work properly.

See response 3 again regarding driver downloads.
If the download is an *.exe file, double click on it, and pay attention to what it does
- if it automatically runs Setup for the drivers and related programs, that is what you want it to do.
- if it doesn't automatically run Setup for the drivers, then you need to pay attention to what it says the folder is where the files are extracted to, then go to that folder and double click on Setup.
- if the download is a *.zip file, you must extract the files from it (e.g. using WinZip 7) to some folder on your hard drive, then look at the files in that location. If there is a Setup file, or an *.exe file, double click on it.
....

For most other hardware or devices, you can use Have Disk to install drivers.

Your computer should not freeze when you click on Have Disk. Actually, I don't know if you are referring to the right thing when you say it freezes - what freezes?
By the way, if you didn't know already, if the drivers are not on a floppy disk, clicking on Have Disk will result in Windows telling you it couldn't find the drivers - you will have to then change the location of where Windows looks on the hard drive to the folder where the drivers are.

- does the computer recognize a floppy disk otherwise?
- is everything else working on the computer properly?
- have you tried loading bios defaults in your bios Setup?

I also am working on a sony PCG-Z505R old lap top and looking for drivers. I fund a complete driver set for PCG-Z505R on driverguide.com. You need to sign up as a member before you can download. The file is a .RAR file that requires unzip. I have not try it yet...but I will try it in the next couple of days....Good luck and let me know how you make out.
