Sony Clie USB cradle won't work

Looking for help. Just bought Sony Clie S300 which has USB cradle. Been on the phone with Sony tech support for hours. Can't get Sony to hotsynch via USB cradle. I bought a serial cradle-worked first time out of the box.
I have PentiumII-300, 64 megs RAM. Running Win 98 (4.10.1998). USB mouse and scanner work fine. Running Asus motherboard (P2L297).
1. Do I need service pack or second edition for Win 98? 2. Anything I need to do to BIOS?
ANY recommendations/advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
