My pc is crazy!! I wont let me install win98se but I can Install Linux Mandrake9.
When I boot with win98 flopy or cd and try to install win98se it doesnt find a Partition win formated (but I've made a fat32 partition using fdisk, Im not a newbie), fdisk lets me format, and make partitions showing me just a bit of my 120gb harddrive. but thats relatively ok. after fdisk, when I try to install win98se it says no partition were found and it reccomend me to use fdisk!, or sometimes win98se starts formatting and when its done, just the same No partition found message appears. So I had Linux Mandrake 9 too, and tried to install it! everything went great. (im in linux now), but... damn! I want Windows! :P

Other problem that happens is in Bios! really strange. when my hardisk is in Master mode the bios doesnt recognize the driver. but in CS (c..selector) mode appears as slave and lets me start the pc, so I can install Linux (at least) cause win98se is impossible to install.

Im desperate trying to fix it, I have several hard drives, and trying them one by one, the same s--- happens. so.. I believe its something wrong on Bios. Has to be! but Im really confused.

Please help me! (I use ata100 cable (80pin) cause I have the 120gb hd westerndigitalcaviar SE).

I had winXP before on the machine, NT, 98. and never a problem. but all started a single day, without doing anything special!.

HELP! PLEASE!! THANKS!!!

Beni, just a couple of suggestions as i believe your problem lies in your partitioning. Not to be funny or owt but just tell me, have you tried deleting all partitions? including extended DOD and non dos (if you had any)? Then, with them all deleted, create a new primary dos. Restart PC and format c: as usual...if it's not solved by this then i pass you to someone with linux experience!!!! =)

Yes I did, but didnt work.

Its strange but what I think its that Win98 can't read the partitions or drive. and Linux (mandrake9) does.

But the problem is then... why dont read Win98 my drive/partition!

Damn! Im really getting crazy. and I depend on Win progs for my job! and Im freelancer! Not Funny! :(

Well, thanks for your suggestion anyway.

Does your MB bios except such a big 120 g drive? check your Motherboard site for a patch to except that size drive. Windows 98 wont recognize the drive properly if your bios doesnt understand it. Check your motherboard site for possible patch.

Beni, I don't mean to question your abilities but you mentioned you formatted with Fdisk. You can't format with Fdisk, you partition with Fdisk, then reboot and format with DOS.

Then you say Win98 start formatting. Win98 doesn't format it puts the files on the hard drive then loads the OS. Windows 98 does not have the option to format the hard drive the way NT4, Win2K, or XP does.

Could you explain a little clearer the exact step you took?

Kurt, my mistake, I format in Dos, of course.
I cant speak/write English so good yet.

Windows 98 SpecialEdition has to have format, cause mine starts formatting, only if no Fat or Fat32 partitions are detected, if theyre detected it starts installing.

I've been trying now for 1 month, everyday, at least 5 times each day. I formated my hard Drive thousand times, Partition it (fdisk) the same, and tried to Install Windows 98 SE but Windows doesnt detect a fat/fat32 partition.
The Partition are there, cause when I give up with win98 I took my linux mandrake9 cds and installed them with no problem, they asked me if I wanted to remove my Windows partitions and format them for linux and I said yes, or no. I tried both, several times.
However I try to Install again Win98se and the same story (no fat/fat32partition) but linux accept it.

My Hard-drive have the jumpers on CS (select), and then is detected, if I set it to Master, it doesnt appear in Bios.

I try to update my bios just now, but the latest version was the one I had.

I hope you understand it better now.

What size partition did you format? I think
Win98SE has trouble with partitions greater
than 64GB. I would recommend allocating
a primary partition of about 8GB and making
the rest an extended partition with logical
partition not greater than 32GB.

I did almost the same, a primary partition with 5gb and a logical of 43gb thou. all that was 100%. of 120Gb :P
fdisk only locates 48gb from my 120gb.. I think before when It worked installing windows, fdisk showed me 120gb or 111gb, I really dont know whats happening.

Have you tried the Western Digital website FAQ? They seem to have a pretty good support section. I would start with this link: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/grid_alp.php. If that doesn't work check their knowledge base section. Here's an abreviated preview of what they got on My bios doesn't recognize the drive FAQ "The BIOS will not detect your drive if the cable connection is not correct. If you are using an Ultra ATA cable (80-conductor) make sure that the Master or Single drive is on the black end connector. Connect any Slave device present to the grey middle connector. Finally, the blue end connector should be connected to the motherboard or EIDE controller card. If you are using a standard 40-conductor data cable, connect the Master device to one end, the Slave to the middle and the other end to the motherboard. In all cases, make sure that the red stripe on the data cable is aligned with pin one on the motherboard and pin one on the drive. For Western Digital hard drives, pin one is located closest to the power cable." For further info go to their website. Good luck.

Everything is ok, I looked the link you gave me, and everything is correctly.

My Bios recognize my drive, remember Linux install works ok.

But the problem is with Windows install. here no drivers found. or not a fat/fat32 partition recognized.

Sometimes win install recognize my drive, say that there is no fat/fat32 and ask me to format. I say yes, and after installing a message like this appears: No Legal (fat/fat32) partition on drive, and I can format again or exit installation.
I have once formated it 5 times (into the windows installation) and always the same thing appears. No fat/fat32 partition. :(

Did you use the disk to setup the hard drive
that came with it? WD usually gives you the
Data Lifeguard disk to ready the hard drive.
If you didn't get one, you can download one
from www.wd.com
Boot up with the disk in and type dlgez at the
A prompt

If you`ve had Linux installed on a hard drive and want to reinstall Windows, you need to delete Linux from the drive`s boot sector. Boot with the Windows boot floppy and at the A prompt type
fdisk /mbr
and press Enter

Yes I know. Did it everytime I was migrating from linux to nothing! :(

My hardDrive didnt come with datalifeguard, I did not know anything before about that app.
But from the homepage, the files are only for windows format! not for linux.

Is the Windows CD a Microsoft CD or a copy/clone CD?
