Some CD-R's aren't recognized

I've got an old school 36x CD-R drive (As far as i know Gateway is the maker). The drive seems to recognize some CD's and not others. Any manufacterer;s CD's are read fine, some CD-R's (Maxwell 48x brand) are read okay and some are not??? The read speed shouldn't matter should it???? I have checked the IDE contoller and the pin-in/out connection on the drive itself and all seem fine. Any ideas????
