I've got an old school 36x CD-R drive (As far as i know Gateway is the maker). The drive seems to recognize some CD's and not others. Any manufacterer;s CD's are read fine, some CD-R's (Maxwell 48x brand) are read okay and some are not??? The read speed shouldn't matter should it???? I have checked the IDE contoller and the pin-in/out connection on the drive itself and all seem fine. Any ideas????

Think for yourself

The laser might be deteriorating, or the drive might be dusty. Spraying the inside with a can of compressed air sometimes helps.

You might try a CD Lens cleaning kit .. usually available at Radio Shack and other places.

I'll try the compressed air first, then see how a Laser cleaning kit works...I'll keep you posted. Thanks

I have known some older CD-ROM's baulk at higher speed CD-R's. I've also known new CD-ROM's object to the old 4X CD-R blank discs.
