Greetings. Got myself a little problem that I cannot seem to fix. Yesterday, when I opened Solitaire, I received the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

SOL caused a general protection fault
in module USER.exe at 0012:00000455.

I also received this error when I tried to open FreeCell:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

FREECELL caused a general protection fault
in module FREECELL.exe at 0001:00003de2.

I have tried to fix this problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the games, disabling my firewall/antivirus software (Norton Internet Security 2004) and by manually extracting the games from the Windows CD. I am 90% sure that there is no spyware on the computer, including the Bonzi Buddy program. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? I am running Windows 98 (not SE). Both minesweeper and MSHearts work fine.

Also, just as an alternative, does anyone know where I could download programs similar to these two that are completely free?

Thanks.

If you're using a pop-up stopper type program disable it. Also some logitech and Microsoft Intellitype mouse drivers have caused such problems. I'm not sure about the logitech drivers file names but if you're using Microsoft Intellitype Mouse Drivers do a Alt/Ctrl/Del and End Task or Process for pointer32.exe and see if that corrects the problem.

The FreeCell and Solitaire games are included in the MS Entertainment Packs 1-4. Download here

Tech_Wiz02, This is just a WAG but even though you turned off your firewall there may be a setting in there somewhere that needs to be changed (possibly don't allow pop-ups/pictures etc.). I'm not familiar with the NIS Program and this is just a possibility.

Thanks for the link.

Ok, heres an update. I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and both FreeCell and Solitaire work ok. But now, just as I logged onto AOL, Solitare crashed and gave the error that I mentioned above.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

I am having the same problems with freecell as well and it all started after installing Norton System Works 2004. It happens on 2 of 3 win98SE machines. I must say I am not impressed with the 2004 version of NSW. Three installs (3 legal copies) and all had/have problems. I I had to reinstall MSI installer before I could get it installed. And to top it all off Symantec wants to charge you for support, possibly even for install issues that are not "their fault"
