Comment:

i have windows 98 se installed on my laptop with internet explorer 6 upgrade. everytime i run internet explorer, the smooth scrolling gets turned off again. i keep re-enableing it, but it always gets turned off again. i was wondering if there was anyway to turn this on permanently, its really anoying because it jumps to suddenly and i lose my spot. any info would be nice, thanks all.

It should keep its setting. Might be worth trying IE Repair, type this in the Run box:

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

If it moans about some wrong file version then shout back. These can usually be sorted despite MS suggesting you reload Windows.

If DerekW's suggestion doesn't fix your problem but everything else works fine for your browser you might try navigating to the following key in your registry.

Registry Settings
User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] Value Name: SmoothScroll Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

There are additional keys for smooth scrolling but this should fix you up.

Obviously, backup Registry first.

thanks for the replies, i tried what you said derek, and it seems to have worked. but the problem i have is it goes on and off when it feels like it. its weird. and then i tried what you said sittee and that D_WORD value wasnt there, so i created it with a value of 1 and it didnt work. so im gonna let this go for a little while longer and see if the repair works or not, but thanks for the replies :)

Let's try something a bit crazy (you never know with IE):

Switch smooth scrolling on then Apply.
Switch smooth scrolling off, Apply, then reboot and make sure it has stayed off.
Now switch smooth scrolling on, Apply, then reboot again to see if it sticks.

I'm not hopeful but sometimes IE and Windows need kicking into responding (no idea why). Otherwise lets hope smittee's other registry tweaks he mentioned might help.

ok that didnt work either, but thanks for the idea. this starting to irritate me now though. i dont understand why windows wont keep this setting, its such a simple thing. infact windows 98 introduced this feature as a mainstream part of the GUI. ie windows exploer and animated menus. well anyway, thanks a bunch for all the ideas, but unfortuneatly nothing worked yet. anyway, ttyl

Well, it was a very long shot....

Might be worth a repost if it stays quiet on here for too much longer. Someone might eventually come along who's had this problem I suppose.

I assume you've googled it to death (in Groups as well).

OK thx for popping back. Hope your spec stands up to XP, might need a bit more RAM to improve performance.
