I'm using a Win98SE on a computer which is networked with one other PC and noticed something strange coming up everytime I boot up. Right after the background is displayed, a small silver square comes up just off the center of the screen and then it disappears. But sometimes the system locks up right at that point - and I can't use the mouse or anything so I have to power down & turn it back on. But sometimes the square just goes away and the system boots up fine. Any ideas what this little thing is and what is causing the intermittant lock-ups?
this could be due to a virus, run your antivirus software and make sure your virus definitions are up to date

have you changed any drivers lately try seeing if there is an updated driver for your vid card maybe. I had a similar problem and the new driver for the video fixed it, worth a try.
Are you by any chance using a Kensington Mouse? I have a small grey square appear on my screen at start up and it's a part of the Kensington Mouseworks software. There is a feature called "show buttons" and if this is enabled, then I get the little square just before the icons appear.

Kensington mouse alright. Just bought it and now i see it. Even with the newer software I downloaded.
1.) There is an option to show mouse buttons or something like that in the setup utility. Disable it
2.) If your mouse does not respond @boot, unplug USB and plug it back in and it will work.
3.) Or if that is a pain, just use the PS2 connection you got with the mouse
