Hi to all,
I have this computer with windows 98 SE, it is working, but is slow. Example: when I press the start button it takes from 3-5 seconds to come the menu option, and when I choose an option... say... control panel, it happens the same thing or when I try to see the properties of "my computer".
I run adware , it found spyware I removed it, I run spybot search and destroy, found spyware I removed it, I run Norton Antivirus, no viruses found, I removed programs that might be causing this problem, but the problem is still there.
I found out something when I run msconfig. In the msconfig file there an entry with no text but the check box is checked.
Please help.
thanks in advance for your help

Fernando

Have you tried defragging your hard disk. Check your disk cache. I use cacheman to manage my cache. It makes my computer fast and very stable and my P3 hardly crashes.

You're running 512mb of RAM with Win98...did you make the necessary changes to allow you to do so?

I hate to see this suggestion. It is the absolute LAST thing you should do, & only after you've tried everything else.

Make sure Adaware & Spybot are fully updated, then run them from safe mode. Do you have a lot of icons next to the clock? Do you really need them all?

Go to START > RUN, type MSCONFIG & click OK, then click the startup tab. Run thru those programs looking for anything suspicious or unnecessary, then uncheck them...click APPLY & reboot.

Win98 will run just fine with 512 megs of RAM. It's when you go over that limit that you need to modify the settings.

There is a program called Tune up Utilities that you can download at www.tune-up.com and the program comes with a applet called '1-Click Maintenance' I was very surprised how much the performance improved.

thanks for all the suggestions. I did most of them, except for defraging the hard drive and tune up.
Does anybody would know why I have an entry in msconfig with the box checked, but no text in the line?

That one does sound a little suspect to say the least. Uncheck and see what happens.

spyware tracking devices will slow the pc down. Scan with Spybot > delete all red findings. Restart PC. Scan with Adaware > delete all that it finds. Restart PC.
Defrag the hard drive > Restart PC.
Turn off every program that may be running that does not need to be running. Look for them at START/RUN/type MSCONFIG >hit enter >
go to STARTUP, uncheck unnecessary programs. All you really need running is: EXPLORER, and a FIREWALL, (download and install Zone Alarm). Systray.exe does NOT need to be running.

This machine is running "very" slowly.

I agree that it is good to get shot of unecessary background programs but it sounds far worse than just that. It shouldn't, for example, be necessary to end all tasks except explorer in order to do better than a 3 second wait from the start button.

I still suspect some trojan, malware or virus. Try this freebie (primarily a trojan finder):

Simple suggestion.
Windoze automatically loads settings you dont need.. the one Im going to tell you about can seriously slow down allot of stuff.

Network card properties/
choice of logon or QUICK logon
Unless you use wins net (antiquated) you should select QUICK logon and set to save and reboot.

This setting is left over from ancient teck times.. but loads up drivers that run non stop.

Go to SPYSWEEPER website they have an online tool to check your drive for bugs.

DEFRAGGING is very important. You shouldnt wait to do this.
Proper;
shut down any program you dont need to be running.(leave firewall ON of course)
EMpy browser caches and recycle bin and internet files in control panel/internet options

Run scan disk (quick not thorough)
Then run defrag. Walk away and never stop it mid-stride.

Degragging is like organizing your closet.
You use stuff everyday and after a week its harder to find what your looking for. Organize and put everything in its place and you can find it faster. This is the SAME in regard to programs and files you use every day on your pc. Most people defrag once a week to keep their computer running swift.

A computer is a perfectionist's nightmare.
