I've just installed an old ISA 3Com Etherlink III Network Interface Card. And all of a sudden I have noticed my computer pauses for a long period of time whie booting. Could anyone offer any explanation for this ??

One option is that in your bios, the option to boot from the network is selected. If this option is listed before the boor from harddisk, then the pc is trying to find something bootable over the network.
