Reply: (edit)This happened to me a while ago and it turned out to be bad sectors on my hard drive. I’m not 100% sure if this is the problem your having but it's something to take into consideration..

Reply: (edit)If the system is not shutting down you need to cure the first problem:- Run scandisk in safe mode then defrag. Once this is done download the Microsoft shutdown patch"try looking on MSN". If this fails you could down load a quickshutdown but try the above first. it's a common problem with 98.

Reply: (edit)After you scan disk and defrag, here is the link to shutdown patch. http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/Win98SE/Default.asp If this link dosn't work use the windows update shortcut from start menu . The patch is called windows 98 shutdown supplement. You likely do this anyway but also delete your tempory internet files.

Reply: (edit)Run msconfig and click advanced tab. Place check mark in box next to "disable fast shutdown". If this line is not present, the patch has already been installed. Disable sounds on shut-down and disable virus scanning of floppy drive on shutdown. Correct any conflicts in device manager. Finally, install the mapped drive shut-down patch. This often works even if you do not have any mapped drives. Mapped drive shut-down
