Slow page load - Tried everything!

CPU/Ram: 800 MHz 256 MB
Comment:

I'm running Win 98 800 Mhz Athlon with 256 MB Ram and a 40 gig hard drive. Currently using Verizon DSL with a Westell modem and using IE6.

I can connect to the internet but the intial IE logon, or if I clink on a link the web page takes forever to load. When I perform a speed test I get between 600 and 650 bps.

I just finished a complete reformat of the HD with a new WIN 98 install. There is minimal software installed. Ad-Aware - Winzip - Nero - Zone Alarm. That's it.

I have tried all of the suggestions from, using spyware programs, checking registry entries, re-installing previous IE version, releasing/renwewing IP settings. Nothing works.

How can I tell if this is a Verizon issue or if there is something going on in IE?

It's really annoying that I pay $35 a month for DSL and my system runs like it did when I was using 56k dial up.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I've tried it with or without Zone Alarm. Same result.

PC Pitstop says everything is fine.

I could see where 800Mhz would be a little slow when trying to run some current day apps, but if I'm just trying to surf the web I don't think it would make a difference.

If you did a "speed check" on your connection and it was only at 600 - 800 bps that is WAY SLOW, considering dialup maxes out a 56Kbps. If you are using DSL, it should be a faster connection depending on how far away you are from the service provider, but certainly faster that 800 bps.
Answer...call you service provider. If you have all of hardware you listed, you should not be running that slow.

May be you are too far from Telco that brings the DSL to your PC. Ask your neigbors with DSL for their experience.

Let me clear up the speed issue. - It's 607 KBit/Sec or 75.9 KBytes/Sec. I can download a 5MB file in just a minute or two.

But like I said it takes forever to have a page load.

This is driving me crazy. I've called Verizon, but they're no help. They just say that everything is o.k. on their end.

Your 800 Mhz processor has nothing to do with your loading of pages. I have an 1800+ XP and I have problems sometimes also, depending on the web traffic. Tonight is one of those times.

Your problem may have to do with your MTU settings in the registry.

Good Luck

Try the suggestions on this page. It made a huge improvement to my system. Tweaks suggested on other sites actually made things worse.

Is it possible you have a default scripting style activated ( a cab file)? This would explain slow pages with file download speed OK. Find out under the accessability option in IE settings.

Thank you, I love gardens. Your fix restored speed to my P1. I use win98 and IE6 with a 56k dialup.

Once the page finishes loading, it runs fine now, instead of taking several seconds for a keystroke to appear.

For people like me, do the following:

In your browser window click "tools" then "Internet options" then "accessibility" (accessibility is in the lower right of the window)
Remove the tick in üser style sheets" next to "Format documents using my style sheet"

Right click on my computer, go to "properties", click tab "performance", SEE system resources, percentage is down to low pages won't load fast even with dsl
Suggest restarting computer when rescources get below 70% Scan disk and defrag once in a while helps also. Also do start, run, type in msconfig, startup tab see how many things actually startup on load which all cause a drain on memory, some are part of the system others are part of programs and don't need to boot with starting up.
Zone Alarm is high end on memory use find one that don't use so much memory
