My friends Dell Latitude is so incredibly slow on start up, the pointer is jerky or just not moving at all. I did a search on Computing.net and seemed to think it could be the battery or Wmiexe but I removed that programme (in close Prog box) and it was still did not free things. The start up list of programmes in the Close Pro. Box is:
Explorer
Wkscalzya
Wkcalrem
Systray
Wmiexe
Winksa
Skke1f5
(The last one only occurred once when I looked straight after start-up. the following also occurred once each:
Uxa2356
Tr9376
Fh2116)
Sometimes these progs with numbers in don’t appear when I start-up
NOTE: The red battery light comes on almost straight away when I start-up so I power it with the external power supply. When I leave the computer for at least 10 mins the mouse is freed up and working normally. However, the red battery light is still on when the computer is working normally.

When I shut down, it always hangs on the “Windows is shutting down” screen. I press and hold down the power button and it goes off. However, when I restart it runs Skandisk saying it was not shut down properly?
P.S. how do I find out what processot this machine has? Intel X86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping1 all I can find in My Computer/Properties.....Computing Net has helped me soo many times I keep returning with friends problems!!Keep up the good work!

Hi BikeWizard, hi everyone,

Boot your Latitude without battery, but with power supply (of course ;-) as I already saw problems of slowness due to a dead battery (I use oodles of Dell Latitudes at work).

To know what your processor is, tell me the exact model of Latitude you have or press F2 at bootup, when the Dell logo is being displayed, you will be led to Bios Setup and will see the processor model on first screen... Esc to leave Bios setup.

HTH

Hi BikeWizard, hi everyone,

Regarding slowness, determine whether it is due to low resources or general cleanup need.
After Windows startup, immediately Start/Run/type RSRCMTR then click on OK/accept screen clicking on OK/have a look at new icon in Systray (bottom right near the clock)... what are the 3 numbers as you roll over icon (or double click)?

Thank you Gerard!! The Batt. out worked a treat! It is a Latitude LS, so if you know the clock speed please tell me. I did F2 but it all seemed Greek to me and I was scared I would balls it up. Bios seems so serious!!
RSRCMTR is not on that machine....but it is wizzing along now so I don't think it is in need of general clean-up (Yet!)
Thanks once again!
P.S. It also had a virus (W32.Klez.gen@mm) but I got rid of it with help from Symantic.

Hi BikeWizard, hi everyone,

Gooood!

Well, I have a Dell Latitude LS500 in front of me and its processor is an Intel Pentium III - x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 6 running at 500 MHz.

You processor is a Pentium III - difficult to say more!
Several clues below:
- have a look at this web page which gives a collection of computers -> http://www.ecora.com/ecora/sample_reports/windows/ffr/Processor_and_Memory_Summary/index-short.html
- Start/Run/type MSinfo32 then click on OK/System Information item provides you with technical data
From here Tools/DirectX diag tool (or below)...
- Start/Run/type DXdiag then click on OK/System tab gives you oodles of technical information and especially the processor

External utilities:
- You can call my page (in French) -> http://gerard.melone.free.fr/LaboWeb/Sys-naute.html#... 3rd point "Ordinateur Estimez le processeur de votre machine (popup)", click on "Processeur", a popup opens and click on the "Evaluer" button... click on the "Fermer" button to quit
- I won't give all addresses below (just if you need them), just quote:
--- WCPUID
--- WinCPU
--- Belarc Advisor
--- Sisoft Sandra
--- Aida32

HTH

Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France
