Comment:

i just bought a new (very cheap) keyboard, genius kb-06x black. on it it has three buttons: power, sleep and wake. i can't seem to get these working on my computer although the box reckons win98se is compatible with them. im wondering if there is anything i have to set up or a way i can find out if my pc is compatible.

thanks
piercy

Go to Power Management and configure the buttons from there.

You may also have and extra function key on the keyboard that you need to press in conjunction with the buttons.

It looks like you do not have ACPI installed. You need a BIOS that is ACPI compliant.

Windows 98 doesnt always load ACPI by default. You sometimes have to tell it to.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q186111/

Near the bottom where is mentions the /p j switch.

NOTE: In Windows 98, the /p j switch is required to enable ACPI support. Windows 98 maintains a BIOS list for ACPI computers, so as BIOS manufacturers create a new valid ACPI BIOS, this is the mechanism for causing Windows 98 to recognize it.

It may or may not work.

That looks like a stack of switches which you add after the setup command, if desired, when installing Windows.

Normally you just type X:\setup (where X is your CD drive). What I think is being suggested is that instead you type:

X:\setup /p /j

The /p /j bit just qualifies the command to allow it to install the appropriate support.

All very nice but the thought of reloading Windows just to get a cheap keyboard to work seems like one heck of an overkill (especially when the poster was not sure that it would work).

My feeling is that there should have been a CD with this keyboard which contains the software to make these features work. You could Google around to see if there is software out there (there are often updates which work in their own right). You will need to search using the model number.

If you can't sort it fairly easily I would forget it. There are plenty of cheap keyboards around, even quite fancy ones - brand new with a CD provided.

.... OK, I did some Googling and it seems there is no need for software, so I was wrong about that. It might just be a dud keyboard of-course.

Otherwise perhaps do need to do as was suggested in #3 but I still doubt if it's worth the effort.

This is not an expensive keyboard so I would be more inclined to choose another cheap one with software provided, rather than trying to force your BIOS and/or W98SE to run it. You might screw up your system in the process.

Maybe there will be some other ideas.

Derek has answered the question regarding forcing ACPI. Just one thing though, if you do go down that route then the command is

X:\setup /p j

Only one forward slash. Setup /j always has another parameter after it so there is no need for the second forward slash.

You can do an in-place installation. That is reinstalling windows over the top of the existing installation. This will keep all you setting and installations.

The reason it might not work is that you still need ACPI support in the BIOS. If the BIOS does not have ACPI support then the /p j command will simply be ignored.

Yup, the second slash was in my immagination only.

Windows overlay usually goes quite well. At the worst the odd program might need re-installing. Up to you obviously.
