I have had to install a new hard drive and re-load windows 98 which seems to be OK. However, I have put the old hard drive back in as a slave but windows is not finding it - any suggestions please.
Thanks.

Did you set the jumpers on the drive to their slave setting? (there's usually a diagram on top of the drive showing the proper configuration).

Make sure the new hard drive's jumper is set to "master" and not "cable select". Also verify that the "master" is connected to the last IDE connector and the "slave" is connected to the IDE connector in between the MBD and the other hard drive. Verify the IDE cable's red stripe is on PIN 1 of both hard drives. Had someone reverse them before for convenience, then it wouldn't boot.

Good luck...

If the cabling and jumpers check out OK, run fdisk, Y to large disk support, option 5 to change the HD, 2 to change to the second drive, then option 4. Exactly what does it say?

One says set to slave, and one says to set to master. Confusued? The bottom line is if you're not using Cable Select, the position of the drive on the cable doesn't matter. And as to master and slave, this depends on which IDE buss you're placing it, and are there other block devices on that buss? If the drive is going onto an IDE cable which has another device on it, it should be set to slave as the other device will already be set as master. If it's on an IDE cable by itself, set it to master. There are certain hard drives which have to be set as master alone, or master WITH slave, in which case you'll have to check the setup for that device and act accordingly.

When you get this worked out, do what DAVEINCAPS suggested and post those results.

I have checked all the jumper/cable settings and they seem ok. When I run fdsik it goes direct to

Current fixed disk drive: 1

choose one of the following:

1.Create Dos partition or logical DOS drive
2.Set active partition
3.Delete partition or logical DOS drive
4.Display partition information.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you set the BIOS for that IDE port to auto detect?

It seems that your hard drive is NOT being detected by the BIOS.
