At least i think it's a simple question. I've got 632 megabytes of RAM. 128 on one chip and 512 on another. I installed the 512 chip today. In laymans terms, what exactly do i need to do in order to get my computer to take full advanatge of the new RAM? The Microsoft support website says i should alter the MaxPhysPage settings in system.ini but the technical jargon confuses idots like me!! I've put in the line MaxPhysPage=24000 - does anyone know if this is correct? Anything else i should be looking to do?

Many thanks in advance!

If you are NOT getting any errors at boot time and are NOT getting any "strange" Out of Memory errors, you don't have to do anything.(except take out the MaxPhysPage line)

If Windows and your applications need that much ram they will.

But, if you start to get the errors above, the first step is to limit the file cache (vcache) to less than 512 by adding a MaxFileCache line in System.ini.

You would have been best to have continued with your first link, which does indicate you have problems:

You said spell it out. Altering the cache goes like this:

Type system.ini in the Run box.
Under the heading [vcache] type:
MaxFileCache=524288
(or alter the figure if it's there already).
Save the file.

This example sets it to exactly 512M. The KB figure you type in is 512 (or whatever) x 1024 because 1KB in computers is 1024 not 1000.

... I'd better add that although the original problems reported don't really sound like the 512+ RAM syndrome I thought it best to investigate this possibility first, since adding memory was one of the things you did. Deleting the MaxPhysPage line may be all that is necessary.
