Sidewinder 3D Pro -- Digital Mode Problems

Comment:

I have a Sidewinder 3D Pro that doesn't seem to be working in digital mode. It's attached to the game port on my Sound Blaster Live! card. I've installed version 3.02 of the game controller software, and then tried the replacement Sw3dpro.vxd file from Microsoft's site. Despite this, the Game Controllers control panel doesn't detect the joystick being attached. I've tried powering down after I attached it, but to no avail.
The interesting part is this: If I add an analog joystick (I.E. CH Flightstick Pro), it detects my SW3DPro and works fine. However, obviously, the joystick only works in analog mode this way, I can't use the 4 base buttons, and I can't set up game profiles because Windows thinks I don't have a SW game controller installed. Does my problem lie with the Sound Blaster Live, or with my joystick? In either case, is there anything I can do to get windows to recognize my joystick as a SW3DPro?

First thing I would do is take the stick back to where you bought it (assumeing that is not a problem) and excange it to see if maybe your problem is a defective joystick. I have a Sidwinder presision pro. Windows detected my new stick the first time I pluged it in, however after a format and reinstall windows would not automaticly detect the stick. Go into the control panel, open the game controlers panel and click add, then scroll down until you find your stick and then select your Sidewinder 3D Pro. This worked for me. I still cant get the USB support to work with my games, but thats another matter. I hope this helps, Good Luck.

Same problem with Sidewinder 3D Pro, ABIT
KT7 RAID (is very good), Windows 98SE, gameport on Soundblaster PCI 128 and Duron 800M.
MS instructions on patch/update followed but in vain, "Joystick not connected".
It's a big shame that MS OS does not support their own hardware !

of 206MHz(2x103).
The MS-patch is for problems caused by
100 FSB, whats about 200 and over.?.?.??...!

Exact same problem as above. SideWinder 3d Pro works fine in analog mode, but fails in digital. Connected to SB Live! card. Fails under both Win98 SE and WinMe. Worked fine under Win95 and Win2K. Any advice?
thanks,
Chris

I have the same problem. I think it is the bus speed on faster new computers. I have a tbird 800 on an abit kt7 raid board. The MS patch worked I guess on some older machines but it doesn't work on the faster machines.

If any of you work out a way around it to get it to work in digital mode I would greatly appreciate an email. I will also do the same if i can work it out.

Same problem. It seems to be the processor speed. I'm using Win 98, Athlon 700, Vortex PCI Sound Card. Gravis GamePad Pro and other joysticks/joypads work with the game port, but this one doesn't in digital. Really bugs me!

Works in analog as a Ch but not under it's own driver with the updated software and MS patch. Sent a msg to their tech support and got a response that said I had to go check my serial # to see if I was able to get support. Pretty bad when you pay $80 for a joystick (which I have 3 of them) and then get an answer like that! How typical.

I have the same problem too and just found two links and a statement in the net:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ARTICLES/Q236/1/13.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/intlkb/germany/support/kb/d36/d36701.htm

"Why my joystick cannot work with my game port?
Since some joystick such as Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro joystick require the MIDI port as
the control interface, you need to enable the "MPU-401 MIDI-in functions" through the
MPU-401 MIDI Device Setting of SoundPro Audio Rack application, which will let the joystick
work fine."

I am also now a member of this unlucky club. Upgraded from a K6-III 400 to new Duron 800 Gigabyte GA-7ZX5 MB and 3D Pro no longer works. Damm, I like this controller!

Tried 3.02 SW and Patch (no help). Submitted webhelp support request with Microsoft (awaiting response).

While looking for a solution found another wwwboard and a response that says he re-installed the original 1.0 sidewinder drives on a newer system an his stick now works. the url if your interested is: http://home.hyperworx.com/~cdr/wwwboard/messages/631.html

I did'nt try it, but so far this is the only documented solution I've seen so I going to give it a try.

Question: Anybody out there have Window ME or Win2K. If so can you check to see if it has a sw3dpro.vxd file and if it newer than version 3.01 (the patch version).

Folks,
Have Good and Bad News

I found my original V1.0 Sidewinder floppy and uninstalled V3.02 and deleted any stray sw3dpro files from the system. For some reason, V1.0 did'nt want to install normally, under Win98SE, so I had to reboot in safe mode and install it. Once rebooted I added the Sidewinder in the Joystick control panel and sure enough, the stick is now detected. That's the good news....

The bad news is, although all eight button display in the control panel, only four work. The HAT control work perfectly as does the rudder and thruster controls. I did have a problem with rudder control when I fired up Descent 3 (couldn't get it to stop spinning), but that's only one game and it might not be a problem with others.

Not having the four base buttons function stinks, but at least I can use the thing until I find a solution or replace the joystick. I have not heard back from Microsoft yet, but will relay this information to them. In the mean time, I hope this helps.

Same problem here with new epox board. Doesn't work in analog or digital mode. Asked epox tech, they said I should reinstall windows (great idea :((() Besindes W98 I have NT40 installed, there the joystick worked fine AFTER I run SP3. So the hardware must be working OK, it MUST be a software issue!
Tips I try next:
- check stettings in controlpanel->multimedia
- enable MPU401 in BIOS
- install 1.0 driver

Use the drivers found in

http://support.mwmicro.com/ftp/ftpindex/index.cfm?AREAn=17

called SW3DPRO.exe. Seem to work fine. You have to be careful with the path - seems to need a proper 8char DOS-Path. If Setup complains about not finding files look at the path it complains about... Sidewinder 3D Pro is now recognized ... HUAHHH...

My System:
DURON 800 on an Epox 8KTA2
ASUS 3400TNT
Replaced my PCI SB1024live with my old AWE32...

the history of sidewinder 3d pro drivers:

1. i have a original 1.0 driverdisk, but the joystick never worked correctly (only 4 buttons, trembling)

2. i used the joystick with windows 98 without any problems (all buttons, no trembling)

3. i bought a new PC: "not connected"...

4. i tried to find the Win98 driver on the cd - without success.

5. now i'm dowloading from http://support.mwmicro.com/ftp/ftpindex/index.cfm?AREAn=17

I have just tried that file 'sw3dpro.exe', but my joystick still won't work in digital mode. That is, I cannot use multiple buttons at the same time, the POV doesn't 'do' diagonal directions, and the four base buttons won't work.

I have the same stuff.

I can assure the group that this is a software problem (as is apparent from the fact that some can solve it by installing older drivers).
The additional proof comes from the fact that the SideWinder 3D Pro is recognized and properly detected by MS Windows XP RC1!
I have Windows 98SE and XP RC1 running on the same machine in different partitions.
Guess what, the 3D Pro is "not connected" on Windows 98, but "autodetected" and works fine on XP.
My system is based on double intel 800EB processors on ASUS CUV 4X D, so it is a -relatively - new system.

Shame on you Bill! It is your own software and your own hardware that don't work together, and no one of you folks give a sh*t.

Sorta the same problem as the rest of you. System is Windows ME on an Athlon 750 with Abit KA7-Raid and SBLive 5.1. I can get the system to detect the joystick but it shuts off every 10 seconds or so. If I play a game it works fine for a while, then makes a hard left and none of the buttons work for a second or two.

Here is some tech. details re: Midi ports and Force feedback joysticks (not 3D Pro but may be related), that may help our collective brain figure this out, since Microsoft Inc. doesn't seem to hire the brains themselves.

The Force Feedback joysticks (from Microsoft and others) use MIDI data to
control their motion sensory effects. This is accomplished by having the game
send MIDI data to the joystick that tells it when to "shake". In a typical soundcard, the Wavetable MIDI daughtercard header is actually the same as the external MPU-401 compatible MIDI connector(on the gameport). By attaching a MIDI daughtercard to the Wavetable header, most soundcards will send the same MIDI data going out of the gameport connector to the Wavetable header. This means that if the external MIDI (MPU-401) is chosen as the default synthesizer in the Windows Multimedia control panel, the MIDI information will be 'split' to two places, both to the Wavetable header and to the gameport.
In these cases, a Force Feedback joystick directly connected to the gameport (on the back of the soundcard) will not receive the MIDI data to "shake".

The solution to this problem is to set the *internal* Wavetable MIDI Synthesizer as the default synth in the Windows Multimedia control panel. Once this is done, the Force Feedback joystick will receive MIDI data from the gameport and will now "shake" appropriately.
NOTE:
There is a serial cable available from Microsoft that allows connection of the Microsoft Force Feedback Joystick to one of the COM ports on your PC.
Using this cable will allow you to use the full features of the Microsoft Force Feedback Joystick as well as having your Wavetable daughtercard as the default MIDI synth in Windows.

Gotcha!!!
I guess I've made it!

So, first my configuration:
A P III 600 MHz,a "native" Win 98 SE (with IE etc.), SB 128PCI and a MSI baord running at 133 MHz FSB.Standard SB driver - don't know exact version. CD was included to the card.

For all step by step:

1. Connect the Sidewinder 3d pro to gameport (why not? ;) )
2. Go to the control panel / game controllers / add MS Sidewndr.
You see it's not connected!
3. Leave control panel and install driver from the disk which came with the stick
4. Restart system
5. Go to control panel and select properties of soundcard/adjustments
6. UNCHECK "Acceppt common LPT Interrupt" (beneath "MPU 401 setting")
7. Go to the game controller in control panel, look and have fun

Testet on win95 and win98se and ME ! Forget the drivers V3.0 and above

Under Win ME you probably must force Windows to use drivers by creative not the MS drivers.
Normally in ME there's only the MS Sidewinder precision pro.

I hope other SB cards work similar...

Thx to MS and Creative for their proper help :((((
Blame on them!!

I HAD this problem, and SOLVED it in a different way.
My machine: P III 550 MHz,Win 98 SE, SB live value, baord running at 133 MHz.
First, the problem is not in the joistick, but in the sound card deffinitions.
What did I do:
1. Create a new "microsoft gameport joystick" with the "add new hardware" at the control panel. Than it apears at the "drivers mannager" part at the "properties".
2. Go to "creative miscellenaous devices" and choose "creative gameport joystick"
3. click on "resources"
4. change the setting to "0000"
5. Go back and delete the "microsoft gameport joystick" you created before.

It helped me, hope it will help you to.
