In "System Information" under running Software->Running tasks there are programs listed I would like to terminate. Not seen in the "Ctrl+Alt+Del" dialogue box. (eg Ddhelp.exe)

The first place to always look is at the programs themselves. If you click around in their own controls (maybe from system tray next to clock) there can often be a disable.

Any that you never want again should be properly Uninstalled, either with a provided uninstall shortcut or from Control Panel/Add-Remove.

If all this fails then type msconfig in the Run box and go to the startup tab. Although strictly this is for diagnostics it can be used as a means to stop programs from running. This might help:
STARTUP ITEMS

Do you really want to disable Ddhelp.exe? It is part of DirectX.

... might help if you are prepared to list the programs you want to kill off.

I used Ddhelp as an example. I guess most of these running programs are called on by Windows or Explorer themselves. These are not programs loading by registry or Msconfig's sections.
Another example: when I close Media player it disappears from "Ctrl+Alt+Del" dialogue box. but under System Information" -->Software->Running tasks it shows running (things get slower) same with Netdde call on by MS Hearts, when the game is shutdown it stays running in the back ground. I am in dial-up hell, and when I disconnect Rnaapp stays running (that one I can kill from "Ctrl+Alt+Del" dialogue box.) I am trying to troubleshoot software that is calling other applications. Hope I explained this well, there are other apps I can only see from sys info box.

Not sure what you mean at #4.

When you run System Info/Running Tasks it does not refresh the screen continuously. So, if Media Player was running when you called it up then it will show it running until you call System Info up again.

I'm just wondering if all the tasks you mention are "really" running or whether they just happened to be running when you called System Information. Try running it again when you have closed the applications in the normal way.

Rnaapp is the exception. This will hang about for up to 15 mins after you come off line (that's quite normal). It won't cause any problem, every W98SE user gets this.

You say "I am trying to troubleshoot software that is calling other applications". Maybe this is what you need to post about - the rest might not really be a problem at all.

PrcView is a process viewer utility that displays detailed information about processes running under Windows. Freeware. You can experiment all you want, shut down whatever you want.

In response #4, I was talking about "task manager" in windows XP, and then the "processes" tab.......... It allows you the end anything(~?~) that is running. I do refresh System Info/Running Tasks I suspect a service is not loading at startup or a file from a service is bad (not getting errors). Some applications are slow and I have done the usual virus/spy/hijack maintenance. I had a bad sector on the drive and re-installed 98se, works fine but ... I can tell sumpin is not right.

Something of a mystery but it might be worth running scandisk again to make sure no more bad sectors have arrived. If you keep getting them it is a warning that the HD is near the end of its life.

Thanks sekirt, I did down load PrcView.

It is a nice program as you stated, I was able to terminate any running application. It did however fail to shed light on the porblem(I thought mystery stuff was running in the background).

I now have concluded that a support program(s) that at one time would load at startup no longer do(es) and when an application requiring it (or them) opens it must load the nonstarted support first and therefore seems to take longer.

I still have mystery hangs, and promptly restart with a thorough scan disk. Apparently everything is fine. This is on my everyday machine and will not stop looking til I find the problem/cause.

I will never be able to say someday, "I know everything" if I stop learning.

Thanks again for everyones help.
I will post the solution when I find it.

Fine. Note that Ctrl-Alt-Del will not show everything that appears listed in System Information/Software/Running tasks. I get exactly the same with Ddhelp.exe for example.

If you haven't done so already run "Ad-Aware" and/or "SpyBot Search & Destroy" and your virus checker, just to make sure there is nothing bogus running with a deliberately misleading name.
