Explain this one. This just happened one day for no apparent reason and has continued ever since then. When I click "yes" to shutdown Windows 95a, the "waiting for your computer to shutdown" screen comes up but then the computer restarts instead of shutting down. Explain that one.

I am currently try to find the cause of this problem. It usually happens on a network. If you choose Logoff first then shutdown, it will shutdown, so I think it is a network problem. I have also seen it happe on a machine when we remove network card and all it's drivers.

Following up to my last message, It usually happens if you have installed a strain of IE4.XX

Try setting the sound that Win plays on shutdown to nothing. Sometimes it hangs trying to play the sound. Also try having clean autoexec.bat and config.sys's as these can cause win to hang at shutdown.

Same problem as Joe Myers.
The waiting for your coputer to shut down screen appears, but then the computer auromatically restarts.

I have experienced the same problem. But the PCs have a mapped network drive from NT server. The shutdown will be OK if all the mapped drives are disconnected before shutdown.

enter REGEDIT and find
KLM\Enum\Root\*PNP####
where ### is a value which will vary from machines. Under each entry, you will find a subkey labeled "0000". Look for the one which says: Advanced Power Management Support.

The value of Configflags should be All ZERO's if not change them. if they are 04 00 00 00 that will disable auto power down.

Found it on another site. Hope it works

RE Jim Bowers Solution

the same can be done by, clicking control panel, system, device manager, system devices, advanced power control, then disabling the advanced power controller,

this is a much safer way for people to solve the problem, THIS WILL NOT ALWAYS FIX THE PROBLEM! but it makes for a much safer fix, as normal users playing in REGEDIT, is only a window of oppurtunity for more problems

The best Fix for shutdown problems in win 98 is a patch they released. For windows 95 its a drive mapping problem. Disconnect your mapped drive and see if it shutsdown clean. If it does then re-install your NETWORK card.

Have Win98SE, and was wondering why it stopped powering off - it restarted instead. I fixed it by going to Start|Run, then typed MSCONFIG, clicked the "Advanced" button, and put a tick beside "Disable fast shutdown". Shuts down, and powers off completely! FIXED!

WILL ALL PROBLEMS ARISING WITH THE 'SHUT DOWN' ISSUE PLEASE BE INFORMED THAT YOU NEED TO GET A PATCH FOR YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM FROM THE MICROSOFT WEBSITE.
AFTER INSTALLING IT SHOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM.
