shutdown and restart problems

Comment:
I recently installed a new motherboard (MSI-6340), processor(Duron 1.2), and ram(256 PC133). After installing them, I reinstalled Windows 98 (first edition). Now I can't use the start menu to shut down or restart my computer. Icons go away, and screen goes black. Then nothing. I could shut down and restart after installing new hardware, until I reinstalled Windows. My restart button works, and so does ctrl+alt+del, and sometimes my power button works, as long as i didn't just try to shut down. I found patches for the problem with windows 98SE, but can't find any help for the regular, first edition. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

it might be a bad or incompatible RAM, things usually can go fine for a while with new RAM, but as soon as some memory is accessed things go haywire....you get any blue screens? vx..errors?

no problems like that. Only problems I'm having are with the shutdown/ restart, screen goes black, no response. I purchased the RAM with the MB and processor. They came as a package deal from the company.
