My best guess is that the problem is related to either heat or bad RAM. Make sure all of the system's fans are working & relatively dust-free. Blow out any dust bunnies with a can of compressed air. If the problem persists, try running a RAM test. Several are available...Google for one.

Position a household cooling fan to blow in through the case air intake slots and see how long you can run the PC. I've just this week made a PC with a faulty power supply run for hours with an external fan but only 10 minutes without.

Your solution for your own PSU issue could have costly results. If a PSU is going bad you need to replace it before it goes completely and possibly takes ather hardware along.

I agree the issue you are having is probably heat related. Use canned compressed air to clean out the dust. If the problem persists then boot into the BIOS screens and find the listing for computer health, or something similar. There are two thing to do there. First just let the computer sit there and watch CPU temperatures. Second, if there is a temperature shutdown option there observe what it is set at. You don't give any system specs so advising you what the temps should be is impossible at this time.
