I have almost the same problem.
When I shutdown my computer in win98,
I can only see the message "Shut down computer..."
But if I push the power button 4 seconds,
it shut down and reboot imediatly!

Config:

Motherboard: Tekram T5B30-B4E (baby) AT/ATX
CPU: K6 200 MMX
Power: ATX 230W

I got the same problem too, but if you log off window before shutting down, it will help a lot. I still looking for other solution where I can just shut it down even if I'm still logged on.

Nope, When I log off, sometimes the screen will freeze, after explorer error. I can never log off or shut down noramlly. I read in windows help that you should check bootlog.txt. BUt I DO NOT HAVE BOOTLOG>TXT AT ALL IN MY COMPUTER!!!
I think this is all linked to user.exe
because my system file checker said it was corrupt but I repaired it. DIDN't HELP.
Some crashes say "user.exe" what should I do?
Nobody seems to know what to do.

Dear confused,
try disabling fast shut down.
this should help.
i have my own problems.
i am so confused, When I go to shut down, the computer will mostly say "illegal operations" under kernal.
This started after I installed REAL PLAYER BASIC 7.0, so anyone who wants it please think twice....it may not affect yours, it is a celeron 400.
Anyone have any advice.
In windows 98 trouble shooters, it says that endterminate=kernal
but mine says endterminate=user
I recently scanned my system files using sysytem file checker, and it said that user.exe was corrupt, so it may be may things, maybe i should just re-install.
can anyone help me?

I am working on a system that has a problem when I try to shut down windows. I can shut down just fine if I boot it up and then shut it down. But if I try to browse the drives (go into My Computer, then go into c: or d:) and then shut down, I get a GPF in USER.exe at 001e:00003f88.

The owner of this system says he could no longer go into chat rooms (I guess Yahoo chat).

Since I have had it, I loged on to Yahoo and it worked fine. He also had 3.5 Gb of video recorded on c:\ which give him about 11 Mb of free space. I deleted the videos, so I expected it to work fine after that... but still I have the GPF. I also ran a 48 hour burn in test on the hardware, so I am sure it is software related. I run sfc and the system files appeared to be fine.

Any ideas of how to fix this without a fresh load of Windows98?

Thanks for any help.

Write Bill gates and complain, it's all their fault. Mine does all of the above, then Scandisk runs and says can't find the FREE SPACE on your Hardrive correctly. They were in such a Fat Ass hurry to fix WIndows 95, this is what you get while they keep the Cash Flowing into his pockets. A Half-Assed Operating system.

Some of you are thinking that a clean reinstallation of Windows 98 will solve the problem, however, I have tried that several times already. Once I start reinstalling my drivers, the system hangs on shutdown/restart.

I also have the shut down/not shut down problem. I have an ATX case and the 4-sec option disabled. I have recently discovered that there is a patch on the net, the problem is that it isn't turning off the video card for one reason or another. If you locate the patch please e-mail me!

in our office we run an NT enviorment and on most of the machines at shutdown the system hangs if you are loged on and will take up to three reboots to shut down the system....but if you are not loged on the system shuts down just fine... why is this?

My P-233 (PC Chips M571 motherboard) would hang on shutdown (Win 98 SE). I enabled "assign IRQ to VGA" in BIOS setup. Fixed!!! Haven't had a problem since.

The "hold down the power button for 4 seconds" issue can be resolved by a setting in the BIOS. There is an option to choose "instant off" or "4 second delay".

Hi,
I'm also having shut down problems. Everytime I go to the start menu, click shut down, and hit ok. It seems like it's going to shut down the screen darkens like it's going to shut down but it refreshes and back to the desktop agian. I've tried the windows troubleshooting and the one that seemed to work when I was trying the Ms system configure. Every step of the way from the selective startup. Then when I go to normal startup is where I get the same problem. Can you help me. Thanks for your time!

Have disabled fast shutdown but still get (randomly) stuck at the Please wait screen. Seems to have something to do with network connectivity. Usually shut down goes fine if I shut down while not connected to the network (not exactly desirable, however). Stalls regardless of the card used (3Com 905C or Intel) and regardless of the software update.
