is there a way to shrink win98se before installation? like ripping out unneeded stuff from the cab files themselves and rearanging them or sth.

I've heard of something called '98 lite'. I don't know what it consists of but it may be what you're looking for.

Otherwise, although it may be possible I don't see a practical way of removing selected files from the cab files and still have the installation work. There's certainly going to be a lot of 98 files that any particular PC won't need, but how do you know which ones?

You won't accomplish anything by attempting this, because you don't have to copy the .cab files to the hard drive.

Either you have a large enough hard drive or you don't. If you don't, then just do an installation directly from the CD, and other than some tweaking here and there, that will end up with the smallest installation on the hard drive.

I haven't tried '98lite, but I've been meaning to. Look around this forum. There was some discussion about it some time ago.

CabPack or CabMaker. The 98 reskit has some undocumented tools.

No. Everything in the cab files is listed in layout.inf files series and at installation time if a file isn't where the inf file says it's supposed to be you enter a loop looking for the file. They are all expanded into a temp folder at installation time.

What purpose do you have in mind? What qualifies as unneeded? Cab files are already compacted awfully hard, just FYI.
