I have a two year old cdrw (Model 8200 HP) that has suddenly just quit burning. The error codes are not due to underrun. I have emailed tech support several times and have done everything they have asked (from changing numerous settings and file names to downloading utilities from adaptec). I have enough room, ram, and am defraged and virus free. I have installed and uninstalled, rebooted and rebooted and still the errors. The tech support is asking that I call ($25 a call) but I am wondering if this is worth the money or am I better to apply the cash to a new burner?
Thank You
Linda

i thought HP gave a 3 yr warranty on its products, try contacting tech support and find out if you can send in your 8200. Maybe the lens is dirty. if you have nothing to loose, you can try buying a CD cleaner. if that doesn't work, and you can't send back the burner, then you can try removing the cd-rw, opening the top of its case, and cleaning the lens w/ a qtip and some mild solvent. good luck

as far as i know hp gaves a one year warranty but they might have gave a 3 year on that drive i dont know. If you find out your warranty is up i would not fool with making 25 dollar calls to hp. have you checked the prices of these drives lately. just check out this page from newegg (a good place to order from)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=list&catalog=5&DEPA=1 also look on www.pricewatch.com but before you buy from a place its a good ideal to look them up on

If you do clean the laser lens, be very careful not to put pressure on it. Don't use solvent! Use a drop of windex. Remember, if you break the label the warranty is void. I had a HP CDRW, and like yours, crapped out. I bought a different brand, and never looked back. I would never buy a HP CDRW ever again. They are way too expensive, and seem to quit working suddenly. Also they are known for their buffer problems, cannot overburn problems and copying of "copyrighted" cd's
All in all, my opinion of HP is that you have a better chance of burning a cd with a toaster than you do with hp.

I am with Vtech on this one. My first burner was a CD4020-I that I paid about $1200 for several years ago. It is a great drive and still sees use here and there.
The newer HP stuff has really take a dive as far as quality and reliability goes.
