I am not able to shutdown my Windows98 system. When i shutdown the PC it stays for a longtime. I know i need to format and install Windows 98. But without formatting we can solve the problem by creating a shutdown ICON on the desktop. I forgot the shortcut key. Can anyone help me to solve this problem ?

I suggest looking for TweakUI for the Windows version you are running. TweakUI allows you to create a desktop shutdown icon.

Now keep in mind, that Windows 98 has a shutdown problem to begin with. This can be fixed by downloading all the MS updates for Win98.

i think i know the shortcut u r looki for..

"c:\windows\rudll32.exe user.exe,exitwindows"
the above is to shutdown windows...

replace 'exitwindows' with 'restartwindows' to restart......

hope this works fine ...

I used to run the restart desktop icon as you suggested (on W98SE) but it eventually became unreliable. The better one for W98 (no good on W95) is this:

C:\WINDOWS\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 2

Also it does not restart via DOS and saved me about 7 secs on boot time. The equivalent for W98 shutdown is to use the above but replace 2 with 1.

Note that it should be one one line with a single space between .exe and shell32

Hi Derek,

Isn't all the commands the same with the exception of the 0,1,2 at the end of the command?

For LogOff:
C:\Windows\Rundll32.exe shell32,SHExitWindowEX 0

For Shutdown:
C:\Windows\Rundll32.exe shell32,SHExitWindowEx 1

For Restart:
C:\Windows\Rundll32.exe shell32,SHExitWindowEX 2

Replacing EX 2 with EX 1 would result in a Shutdown vice a Restart.

Name the Shortcuts as you will but the path determines the results.

Might be all wet on this one and if so would like some feedback.

Take Care,

Good Day All!
Mesich

Yep mesich, spot on (there is an MS Q for this one kicking around). I just stuck to the ones mentioned.

The main point is that these are the right ones (and better I reckon) for W98 but the older versions Harikanth gave do have the advantage of being useable on both W95 (and W98 sort of).

Who's turn for a pint?

Derek

PS. How did you get them to go right across the page? Maybe my caps ruined it.
