My computer was accidentally turned off last Thursday when it was running, and when I went to start it back up I got to the beginning of the desktop and then got two error messages. The first one said:
Error loading Explorer.exe
You must reinstall Windows

then immediately following is:

A required .dll file c:\windows\system\shlwapi.dll not found

The computer refused to do anything else. It wouldn't boot from the Startup disk and I tried to boot it from the Win98 CD but it wouldn't allow me to reload windows.

I finally got it to boot up by going back with my GoBack programme to a couple of hours before.

TODAY I restarted the computer for the first time since then (it's been running since last Thursday) and got the same messages. I ended up having to go back in time to last Wednesday before it would reboot.

My obvious problem is how do I solve this without having to go back all the time? Both the 'missing' files are there and they are fairly current. I haven't tried reloading Windows now that I'm up and running again as I have read that this may not actually fix the problem. Has anyone got any ideas???
Thanks,
Simon

Otherwise, reinstalling windows `on top' without a format, will fix it and you will not lose any valuable data. It should take about 45 minutes.

Did you apply the recent IE Patch from Microsoft ? Cause it did the same to my Win98 and it crashed with the same error messages after reboot.

Geez u guys are quick!
Tufenuf - I have been debating Microsoft's answer - I read about it earlier but it doesn't refer to the .dll file problem - I assume the two are related.

Globul - I did apply a patch from MS recently - there was probably one for IE in there somewhere. I'm now running IE6.0.2800.1106IC. If I go into add/remove software I can revert to an earlier version. But I've been running this version for a couple of months with no problem until last week.

Might be worth going back to what I had??

I had the same problems with:
October 2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (828750)
http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/B/B/ABB44141-F5D9-4BCA-B85C-9CDBEE344F14/q828750.exe
And I solved the problems with reformat.Luckily I had ghost image and didn't have to reinstall everything. Then I downloaded this patch again and unzipped it. Guess what I found inside "Shlwapi.dll" ! thank you Microsoft !!! Thank you !!!

P.S.
How to uninstall
To remove the download, complete the following steps:

On the Start menu, point to Settings and then click Control Panel. (In Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel.)
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
In the list of currently installed programs, select Q828750 and then click Remove or Add/Remove. If a dialog box appears, follow the instructions to remove the program.
Click Yes or OK to confirm that you want to remove the program.
Didn't work for me cause I had no Windows. Good luck !

Hmm. I had alook and I have Q822925 for IE and Q823559 Windows update - different to yours and not downloaded this month. Plus I haven't any probs until last week when the thing was turned off by accident.

My problem is that I am terrified to restart the computer unless I'm almost positive it will boot up as I may not get back to Windows again. Is shlwapi.dll and explorer, exe likely to be related? Explorer.exe refers to Windows explorer and not IE.

IE and Windows Explorer are integrated. Type http://www.google.com in Windows Explorer and see what happens.

globul - you're a lifesaver!

I removed the two updates that I mentioned and then was almost violently ill as I rebooted the system. It came up!! Yippee! And I've noticed that the shlwapi.dll version now matches the iexplore.exe version (both are 6.00.2800.1106) so that must've been it.

Man I'm happy - If we ever meet somewhere I owe u a huuge drink.

Cheers - and thanks to others who helped too.

Simon

I am encountering the same sitaution on my W98SE. After shutting down the PC I am unable to reboot in Windows. I actually installed the october patch 828750.
As I caould not get the explorer starting agin, it was impossible for me to add/remove the patch.
I downloaded then the patch an another PC I have, extracted the shlwapi.dll file using winzip and copied it onto the windows directory of my W98SE machine.
Windows now starts up after rebooting the system, BUT I have no icons or menues available. Only possibility is to ctrl-alt-del and shutdown the system. Only two processes seems to run.

Any idea why this did not work and how I could solve it up without having to reinstall W98SE?
If reinstalling is the only way possible, do I need to reisnatll also the applications like Office, ... or will they stay active and operational?

marcpeters2, thanks for the suggestion in your question, as I am having the exact same problem as you on a Win98SE system that I am fixing for a customer. Two things...

Could you E-Mail me the copy of shlwapi.dll that you used to make it boot a "little better"? nmason@infoway.lib.nm.us

And what I plan to do next, and suggest that you do, is boot up in safe mode is uninstall IE6. Then try reinstalling it without that patch.

Thanks,
Nolan

Nolan,
the shlwapi.dll I used is on its way to you. Hope it helps. I finally ended up by reinstalling W98SE as starting the system up in secure mode didi not bring any GUI components on the screen and not skilled enough to remove/unistall IE6 in another way.
