Hi All,
As with most of the other posts I have read about this system file and the problem it creates, I am writing this for a friend as her puter is out of commission. This is the only board I found that had the no icon/taskbar problem & suggestions written with an actual response that it was successful.
Here is the original post:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/139250.htmlNow, here's the thing:
I need someone to send me a copy of this system file (shdoc401.dll) for Win 98 Se using IE 6 SP1.I have done a lot of searching and reading on this and what I have found is that if you are running an older version of Windows and upgrade to IE 6 SP1 this particular shared system file will eventually corrupt other system files and explorer will not run.
We hope to restore her puter just temporarily so we can backup her photo album.
Then reformat. We were told by a puter tech friend that this shared system file will keep corrupting other system files (dominoe effect) so only solution would be to start from scratch and reload windows. Now this is not etched in stone, but from what I have read if you are running Millenium or earlier versions of Windows stick with IE 5 or 5.5.
Much appreciated

I wonder if you have been misinformed. There are millions of people running Win98 and IE6 that do not have a problem.

I am sorry but that is pure nonsense. I have been running IE6 from beta to SP1 on a win98se system with no problems or BSOD since it came out. If the person that told you this is and IT tech it is time to move along and get someone else.

See below Microsoft sites on repair and driver site for the file.

Hello everyone,
The correct version for Win98 running IE6 is 5.50.4705.900, unfortunatly I do not have that version at the moment. I will be at a Win98 machine in a few hours that is running IE6 and can send the file then if someone else hasn't.
I'll check my hard drive and some backup cd's I have right now as I did have a copy of it.
Good Day!

Hi Guys,
Thanks to all who responded. I appreciate it very much.
I must say though that I did state this was not etched in stone ... what I should have said was "might happen" rather than "will happen" and that it was my personal opinion. Didn't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers.
I am sure IE6 is good for most, but I also must add that others who have experienced this same problem might tend to disagree.
JohnT - BSOD stands for ?
Now this might be a stupid ? but have to ask ... I am running IE version 5.50.4807.2300 and have this file so can we use it or is it different for IE6 SP1 ?
Thanks again,
Logger

BSOD is common jargon that stands for Blue Screen of Death. It's that big blue screen that comes up with white text on it and tells you that something has gone wrong.
Usually you end up re-booting in order to get going again. If it happens a lot you try to fix it, if it only happens from time to time you blame MS (or whoever else you fancy).
