Hi,
This is my second note...my first note
yesterday was No icons, no taskbar. I
think I've found the problem now, but I still
can't figure out how to fix it. It seems from
reading here and elsewhere that there is
a conflict between this file,
(shdoc401.dll)and a newer version of it. It
belongs to IE explorer, and I've seen
others here say they fixed it by installing a
newer version of the dll file or installing a
newer version of IE. I can't seem to find a
way to do either of these. I can't get the
computer to accept the command A:\
install, or setup. I can't get the prompt to
do much with the dos commands.. it
responds to a few, like dir, and the ones
for the registry, and scandisk. Perhaps
I'm using the wrong syntex? I've also
seen where people say they have too
long of a filename causing this problem
too, and I do have a long filename
showing up in scandisk, but it won't let
me fix it. I cannot get into the registry to
fix it... I have done the scanreg /fix, but the
file still seems to be there. I've done
scanreg, regedit, which does not give me
the hkey things, but a different format. I'm
really in a bind, but I feel I'm closer to the
answers...just can't execute them. It's
either the Explorer, which is a very real
possibility, since I just reinstalled the
windows, or it's this filename, but I'm
betting on the Explorer, as we did have to
upgrade it after reinstalling windows the
last time. How can I get a new version of
Explorer into this computer via dos only. I
have no way to use windows at all...
Any and all help would be appreciated...
This seems like a great group...
Thanks....Artist

What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

I suspect it's an early version that is
packaged on the win98 disk... not certain
which one, as I can't bring anything up,
but I know it''s earlier than 6.0, probably
earlier than 5.5... The win 98 disk is at
least 2 years old.

Have you tried starting the computer in Safe-Mode?

Have you tried to extract the shdoc401.dll from the Win98 cd?

Sorry I don't have time right now to explain how to I must take off for about an hour, I am sure someone else will come along. I will check back as soon as I return.

That file does get updated with IE versions so it adds to the difficulty if you don't know which IE is on there.

The "original" file can be extracted from the W98SE CD using DOS but it's much easier to use Safe Mode (if possible).

Insert your boot floppy (StartUp disk) and select the Safe Mode screen. Let us know if you can get there.

To get to safe mode you don't need the floppy. Hold down the Ctrl key while booting. If that doesn't work keep tapping the F8 key while booting.

Hi again...me... I don't need to extract the
current version of the (shdoc401.dll) file
from the win 98 CD, as that already is on
the CD when I try to install windows. I
think that file is the one creating the
problem. I need to somehow install a
later version of the same file to the hard
drive. Anyone think I should upgrade to
win xp? sigh...

Out of curiosity, have you tried the [Ctrl]+[Esc]key or [Win]+[E]key combination as I suggested in your previous thread?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a 486 machine you are working and I don't think you'll get Windows XP up and running on it.

Hi Count,

As a matter of fact I did try all of the
suggestions that you offered in my
previous note... thanks for the tips...
unfortunately, nothing works. Somehow
the ability for "windows" to appear in any
way is being blocked by something.
Either this mismatched file, or an overly
long file which I can't seem to get to...

What a small world :-)

A few more thoughts...

A supplement to the key combinations, Method 1 in the below article.
Taskbar is Not Visible in Windows
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;134237)

A combination of these two articles,
Taskbar Missing in Windows 95/98/Me and How to Perform Clean-Boot Troubleshooting for Windows 98, brought up another idea.
Rename user.dat to user.art, system.dat to system.art, user.da0 to user.dat and system.da0 to system.dat. Now reboot to see if that would make any difference.

Hi Count,

Thanks so much for trying to help with
those articles. The first with all of the key
combinations is of no use, though I tried
it... The task bar & icons are not
minimized or shrunk..they simply cannot
appear for some reason. I did try all of
the key combinations and many more
besides, trust me. ;) I have also clean
booted many times. :( Still the same.
Just a flash of the task bar, then it's gone
for good.
The registry is a problem... I cannot edit
it as I can't seem to get into the real
registry. I can only access it from a
command prompt, and when I type in
regedit or regedit.exe I don't get the part
that shows the Hkey_Stuff, but rather I
see :
REGEDIT [/L:SYSTEM][/RUSER]
filename1
REGEDIT [/L:SYSTEM][/RUSER]/C
filename2
REGEDIT [/L:SYSTEM][/RUSER]
/E filename 3[regpath]
REGEDIT [/L:SYSTEM][/RUSER]
/D regpath2

/L:system Specified the location of the
SYSTEM.DAT file..... etc...

I have tried putting the /L and different
things in at the prompt, but I just get a
bad command. I know what the registry
looks like when you get to where you can
edit it, but I can't get there... at least not
yet. :)
Thanks for your patience... Pretty soon
this computer that's in trouble is going to
go back to it's Mom without being fixed..
it's a dilly. ;(

Better just add that it's only W95 that has system.da0 and system.da0

Registry restoration on W98 uses scanreg /restore (from 5 backups).

I'm more inclined to think this requires a later file version to match the IE that is actually installed.

You could look at the readme.txt (which is in c:\program files\internet explorer) but presumably you can't get to it the normal way.

Not sure how good you are at DOS but you could do it from there:

Get the C: prompt (if necessary go back up the tree using cd..) then type:

cd progra~1\intern~1 (hit Return).

Now type edit readme.txt (hit Return).

At the top his should give the IE version in broad terms. Maybe then someone can send you a file that is a lot nearer - I have some. It would need putting in via DOS too by the sound of what you are saying.

For that reason, I'll be putting my head down and give my brain a good night rest.

Derek is correct, user.da0 and system.da0 are "backups" of Windows 95 user.dat and system.dat.

I'll give the issue another thought tomorrow.
In the mean while I hope you get it solved, I'll check on the progress tomorrow.

Hi Derek,
OK... did that. I've been using the
computers since the days of DOS...
always a home user, self teacher...
Thanks for the exact DOS directions... I'm
out of the DOS loop these days, though I
looked up some terms while researching
this project. OK..the readme txt said that
the version of Explorer was 6 with service
pack 1... OK... I know that the version of
windows I'm installing has an older
version of Explorer than that on it, but how
do I correct this. You are correct. I will
need to do it in Dos. I think I just need to
get the updated file shdoc104.dll into the
Windows/system, but would definately
have to do it via dos... Thanks for
answering...
Any and all help
appreciated. I feel as though I am close..

Artist,

I am sending you the shdoc104.dll for IE 6.0 and Win98.

Copy it to a floppy.

Rename your current version to shdoc104.lld

Copy the file from the floppy to C:\Windows\System

Post back here with the results please.

ARGGGGGGHHHHHHH.....
I am very good with moving files around. I
have saved this file to my A drive, and
even my C drive, and I can see where
there is the correct amount of space used
on the A disk, exactly (483 kb) but when I
try to see what's on the disk, nothing
shows up... when I tried to install it on the
computer we're working with, it said "file
not found shdoc104.dll" .... Is there a
secret code on the .dll files, or something
I'm missing here... Thanks guys for
being so quick with your answers... I may
need a few of those cold ones myself
before long... Thanks Mesich... I have no
idea of why this file isn't showing up. I
can't copy it...only choices are open or
save... I even tried to drag it. Right now
I've emailed it to another computer in the
room...will try it from a different mail
program... but doubt that will do it...

Err Umm. Trying to understand this - no secret code etc.

If it's on the floppy on a working machine it should simply show as file schdoc401.dll (like any other .dll).

You won't open it by double clicking and peer into if that's what you mean.

On your dud machine mesich's lines 4 & 5 (should be one line, they wrapped round on here) it should accept the rename which proves that a file of that name already exists.

On the last two lines (wrapped round again) it should just accept it because the old one has been renamed.

Not sure if there is a need to register this file (any thoughts mesich?) but let's get it in first.

OK... I know I've copied it for sure... put it
on the desktop finally and copied and
pasted it to the A disk That was the first
time I could see it showing up (as a
physical graphic icon) when I explored A.
....but as soon as I take the disk to the
"sick" computer and try to install it the way
you told me to, it says file not found. I
perceive this to be either a hidden file, or
in some kind of hidden format? I'm
confused.?? When it was being copied
from desktop to A drive, I could see 0
files, 1 hidden at the bottom of my screen.
If I try to open the file with explorer now,
there is no file to be seen... I'm sorry. I
really am fairly computer literate, but this
is a pain. I was so excited to get the file,
and the instructions were first rate, ...now
I've got this new puzzle...if any of you have
any ideas, let me know...meanwhile...
sigh.. Thanks for your patience...

Finally... OK, the glitch was "me" and old

the A drive on the sick computer, and saw

the filename, and Voila!. It fixed the
problem, and the sick computer is
working with all icons, and task bar.

Well here I'm, back to check on the progress.
The problem is solved, way to go guys! Happy for Artitst.
And yes, I gave the issue another thought...

My thoughts didn't produce the shdoc401.dll, (did a brief search for it yesterday) but lead me to a article by
Brien M. Posey, MCSE for TechRepublic.com "Reconstructing a Corrupted Registry" dated September 1999, published on Microsoft TechNet CD-ROM bundle (August 2002).

The article appears to be available online too, at www.techrepublic.com, but it's in the "TechProGuild" members area. :-(
Oh well, can't have them all...

It's always a pleasure teaming up, with the lot.
Thanks to you!

So the problem is that there is no taskbar or icons on screen. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Del to check what processes are running there are none. When I press the Windows-button there is an error message regarding Rundll32. Then the computer freezes so I cannot e.g. check the details of the message.
