im trying to get an XP pro machine to share a printer with a win 98 box.
I can share files between both pc's and they're both on the same workgroup. Ive installed the printer on the XP machine, and it prints fine.
when i go to printers->add printer on the win98 box it asks me where the printer is, i tell it network, and it diplays the XP printer ok. then it asks me which make and model it is (its a hp deskjet 3550) which isnt on the list, so i click "have disk" but there arent any drivers for it on the disk supplied by HP! Ive tried downloading the drivers from HP, but the only thing available is a ~28meg executable which only allows you to install the printer locally. (exactly the same file that is on the installation disk) If i try and install the additional printer drivers on the WinXP machine (the win98/me ones), it asks me for a non-existant file on "win 95,98 and me" disk, which also dosnt exist. Why dosnt hp just put the drivers on the disk? I dont know what else i can tell you... HELP

Just try to install as a local printer. then as a network printer. When prompted for the drivers select the option of display a list of drivers. The correct driver should be on the list.

I have just tried the same thing with my old Win98 machine to a Panasonic printer on XP and its quite a convoluted process. Easy when both computers have the same OS.
All I can suggest in addition to what OtheHill suggests is to make sure you are using Win98 drivers.

thanks for the prompt replies!
yeah- what i needed to do was install the printer locally on the win98 machine (which meant that i had to physically plug it in locally too) then unplug it, and put it back on the winxp computer, and then add another "network" printer on the win98 machine. since i had installed the software, the new drivers appeared in the choose make & model screen. i then deleted the local printer after installing the network printer.cheers guys!
