Comment:

Can anybody tell me if there is a way that I can share a modem in Win '95 or Win '98 First Edition. I need to allow access to the modem on a second computer running Win 3.11 WFW.

That would be no matey, do youself a favour and upgrade to as man's OS win98se and try this little lot
THE SERVER (the one with the modem...)
Machine with modem and win 98SE and modem sharing enabled:
Machine name (on the id tab in network): AMD300
Then go into Network in the control panel and go to the configuration tab, and
set these like so...
TCP/IP(Home)->Network settings
IP ADDRESS TAB:
IP: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY TAB
192.168.0.2
DNS CONFIGURATION TAB
HOST: AMD300
DNS SERVER SEARCH ORDER: 192.168.0.2
TCP/IP(Shared)->Sharing device (what makes it work)
IP ADDRESS TAB:
IP: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY TAB
192.168.0.2
DNS CONFIGURATION TAB
HOST: AMD300
DNS SERVER SEARCH ORDER: 192.168.0.2
TCP/IP->Internet Connection Sharing
Do not change this beasty. If you try and specify settings then when you
connect to your ISP it can't assign you an IP, making this somwhat pointless!!!
There will be loads of things in listed but they are not used. Do not change
anything else.
NEXT.......
The client (the one without the modem.......)
Again go to the Network applet, and make sure all you have is (just leave things
like IPX off for now to keep things simple):
Client for Microsoftnetwork
TCP/IP
Network adaptor.
Again, go to TCP/IP setting and put this lot in:
IP ADDRESS TAB:
IP: 192.168.0.3 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY TAB
192.168.0.1
DNS CONFIGURATION TAB
HOST: AMD300
DNS SERVER SEARCH ORDER: 192.168.0.1
Then restart both machine, and cross your fingers. And before anyone starts, i
KNOW we don't support networks, it's just useful somtimes for our own
uses...

either use a proxy server - several out there...

or as 'Biglad' suggests get '98SE which includes ICS.

For more details... visit:

http://www.wown.com aka http://www.helmig.com

and have good read; especially the modem sharing section...

Good luck,

LM-S
