I recently installed an ethernet card (Linksys), PCI on a WIN98 machine. It installed without a hitch, and the device manager shows "no conflicts". It is sharing an IRQ with my Diamond Viper 550/TNT card (IRQ11). Things are fine while I am surfing, but when I open an app that demands video card resources (a game or 3D app), I take a huge hit on my connectivity, and my PC want s to freeze up (video-wise). I was told that is was due to this IRQ sharing.
My question is, how do I manually change the IRQ for my network card? WIN 98 will not let me do it, displaying a "No Modifaction Allowed" error when attempting. I went into the BIOS and set the PCI configuration to "manual", but this appears to have no effect.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce

If you have an AGP video card, the AGP slot shares resources with PCI Slot 1. Great for Voodoo cards and TV tuners, not so hot for NICS. If you have such an arrangement, simply moving the card to a different slot will do the trick. Also on many mother boards the last PCI Slot shares resources with ISA Slot 1, just to keep things interesting. Of course, the samething applies. 'Tho most modems and sound cards are far more generous with resources than a video card would be.

Bruce,

If what Doofus says doesn't work. Try this. Remove the Network card from Win98. Then shutdown. Go into the bios and set the PCI for manual IRQ assignment. Set every one except say IRQ 10 for Legacy ISA. This should force windows to assign IRQ 10 to the network card. I had to do this for my D-link 528CT card in one of my machines and it worked. Another thing you might want to try is to change the resource that the video card is using. Either way, sharing a IRQ with a NIC is just bad form.

Hope this helps.

Great. I will try Doofus's first, if it doesn't work, then it's Fox's idea.
My video card is AGP and the NIC is in PCI 1 so maybe that is my problem.

Thanks for the help.
I will post if it works or not.
