I have a friend who started getting messages on Scan Disk that files were crosslinked. Then, today, when she tried to boot up her computer, she gets the following error message: MSGSRV 32 - Caused a segment not present fault in module setupx.dll at 002:000056FF. If she closes that message, she is unable to get beyond the screen saver. She told me the setupx.dll file was crosslinked at one time but thought it wasn't any longer. She's running Windows 98 and the computer is a Cybermax which is now out of business. If more information is needed, please let me know. Otherwise, any suggestions? Thank you.

Run SFC (system file checker, but please read the info page first.
Extract the file from the install CD or possibly the hdd, it's in the Precopy2.cab File folder.
I suggest to also get a copy of the Win Me defrag utility & install it. Run a thorough scandisk then defrag.Note: when running defrag make sure nothing is running in the background incl screensavers,virus progs etc.
If you use the F8 key during boot to launch the startup menu you can defrag in safe mode which is a lot easier than hunting down & turning off all the other progs.
Let us know how it went.

L.G. Thanks for your advice. However, if she cannot get past the screen saver, how can she access the SFC?

[1] Boot to Dos mode.

[2] c:\>scandisk [enter]
to clear up any doubt on crosslinked files.

[3] c:\>extract /a [path:]\win98_22.cab /l c:\windows\system msgsrv32.exe [enter]

[4] c:\>extract /a [path:]\precopy1.cab /l c:\windows\system setupx.dll [enter]

[5] c:\>win [enter]

notes : [3] and [4]
1. commandlines in one line, no line break; 2. [path:] points to installation cd;
3. the starting numeros of cab files depend slightly on the version and os, but the above should be ok for this purpose.

If any doubt or problem still unresolved, post back for more help.

Thank you both for your advice. In the meantime, my friend had someone come to her house who fixed her computer without telling me. I will keep this information for future reference though.
