Setup/Install Problems with CDROM

I've upgraded my Win 98 machine to a new motherboard and CPU (Athlon 1.2 Ghz). I reformatted my harddrive and re-installed Windows 98. Everything runs fine. My problem is that I can't seem to install any of my other software from the CD drive (other than the Windows 98 CD). Everytime I try to run a SETUP or an INSTALL exe from a CD I get messages like:
SETUP executed an invalid instruction in module SETUP.exe at 0167:0042fbea. Registers: EAX=00000001 CS=0167 EIP=0042fbea EFLGS=00010293 EBX=00630000 SS=016f ESP=0073fdb0 EBP=0073fe38 ECX=c1807f30 DS=016f ESI=81d4cca0 FS=0f2f EDX=bffc9310 ES=016f EDI=00000000 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: ff 7f f7 5e 00 00 ff 7f f7 5e ff 7f ff 7f ef 3d Stack dump: 00429e8b 00000001 00000074 81d4cca0 004267e2 00000000 81d4cca0 00630000 00000000 0073fc44 bffc9490 0073ff68 bffc05b4 bff79198 ffffffff 00000001
These software CD setups worked fine on the old system so I know it's not the CDs. What did I miss during the system re-install?

Sounds like there was a little glitch during the install. I would run it again, without a format.

I've reinstalled Win98 (yet again), corrected the setupx.dll that was corrupted (using sfc), swapped in and out various memory chips (all of which were acceptable by the motherboard) and verified that the CD drive has the correct driver (doesn't require a driver, uses the MS DOS driver). Unfortunately I still can't run Setup, Install or Autorun exe's on a CD. What else can I try?

I've finally resolved the problem. I had to go into Control Panel -> System -> CDROM -> Properties and disable DMA (which had been enabled somewhere along the way).
