Setting up home network

I am trying to set up a home network and am running into problems. I have one PC with Win2k Server installed and one PC with Win98. I am using CAT5 network cables through a 3Com 8port Hub (I would have used a cross over cable but I don't have one long enough to reach between the machines). I have setup NETBeui as the network protocol on both machines and bound it to the Ethernet adapter on each machine. Both machines are in the same workgroup. My printer is connected to the Win98 machine and I want to share it with the Win2K machine. I have turned on sharing on both hard drives and the printer.
Here's the problem. Each machine can only see itself on the network. Loopback tests are successful on each machine but neither machine can ping the other. I have checked for IRQ conflicts and there are none.
