Make sure that the boot disk you're using has CD rom support.

At the A:\ prompt type In the following:
D:setup. "D" is what ever the letter of your CDrom is.

The backslash was left out of the prior post. It should be
D:\setup or E:\setup or F:\setup or whatever

Sounds like you need another boot disk. Download one from wwww.bootdisk.com and extract it to a floppy. Then boot with it, choose cd rom support and at the a:\> prompt d:\setup.

It's possible that you have an ancient cdrom drive that isn't supported by the drivers on the Win98 startup floppy. You will have to determine the manufacturer and model number of the drive and download the correct driver.

How many drives do you have on it. As in
hard drive, cd, cd-rw, etc. If there is 4
different drives, you may need to use a
higher letter, like f or g

Starting all over isn't going to help. The only problem is accessing the cdrom drive.
What is the make and model of the cdrom drive?

I've gone thru the same dilemna. I looked at this website, printed out how to fdisk and format and followed it to the letter. I used the CDrom in BIOS as the first boot device and whooooosh, it came right up. Just make sure all the settings in BIOS for the drives are on AUTODETECT.

Hi there,

I had problems on every step of the way since I was partitioning my first hard drive on my older Pentium 11 as 1 partition.
two days ago. After you formatted your C drive with your startup disk with the command FORMAT C:/S did you answer Y to the statement at all your data on Drive C: would be lost? Then you can leave the Label blank and press enter. Then restart computer with boot disk and choose Start computer with CD-ROM support and press enter and ESC. Your CD-ROM drivers on your Startup disk (or boot disk) should work for this. Afterwards you should get your D: or E: prompt from typing it in. Now you are ready to install your windows CD by insert the Windows CD and then typing X:\setup.
