Hi
I have a problem with connecting to a server to install many programs. When i try and install Yahoo Mesenger for example it gives an error and says:

An error occured while trying to connect to the server (Error 1)
This could occur when you do not have an active connection to the internet or your proxy settings ar invalid.

I know that my internet is working because i am asking for help on this advice from my computer. And i have no clue what proxy settings are and how to change them and what to change them to. If anyone could help me with this it would be deeply appreciated.
Also i am a complete novice so please try to give simple advice. also i have tried istalling other programs that need the server and found they give errors similar to the one above like real player's.

Are you on a LAN, or are you on a home computer?

Do you have a firewall installed/enabled? Are your TCP/IP settings configured properly?

Continued from my input on your new post (which might not last):

A proxy server is interposed between your server and your machine which acts as a kind of buffer. It is unlikely that you are set up this way without knowing it.

Go to:
IE Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Settings button.

If you have a Proxy Server there will be a tick in the box. I suspect you haven't.

Not sure what to suggest but no harm trying IE Repair. Copy/Paste the following into the Run box:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Close IE then hit Return. You should see the option.

Note. If you are using IE5 put 5 for 6 in the above command.

Sorry, not much more I can suggest.

I tried typing winipcfg in the run command. It gave me the settings but the IP adress was 0.0.0.0 Is that normal?

I don't use Messenger so I can't really help on that.

IP address as 0.0.0.0 doesn't sound at all normal, yet you can get online. Mine gives my normal IP address (which varies but that's normal for my server).

Might be worth contacting your server and let them go through your settings. They are usually particularly good at this as they do it all the time, and it is much easier over the phone.
